Choose the business question first

A Forbes-relevant proposition needs more than a successful founder who wants recognition. Identify a business question involving markets, leadership, capital, industry change, technology or another area a current writer actually covers. Then ask what the client knows that could help explain that question. The relevant unit is the writer’s beat and audience, not the entire Forbes brand. A privately held supplier with unusual operating evidence may offer a stronger story than a larger company repeating familiar claims. Treat this as a research hypothesis to test against recent reporting, not an official acceptance formula.

Prepare evidence at the right scale

Connect the company’s experience to the broader claim without pretending one case represents an entire market. Separate audited records, internal estimates, customer observations and executive opinion. Show the period, geography and relevant comparison. A founder saying demand is changing is a starting interview lead; order patterns, buyer conversations and an independent perspective make the proposition more reportable. Include what contradicts the preferred interpretation. If the data cover only existing customers, say so. A narrower claim with a credible method can be more useful than an ambitious trend headline supported by a selective anecdote.

Find the appropriate writer and source offer

Read current articles and the writer’s public biography. Identify whether the proposed material extends an active beat and whether the writer is reporting news, analysis or advice. Use a current professional contact route and explain the connection in one sentence. Offer access to people who can answer difficult questions, including a customer or specialist when relevant and available. Do not mass-send the same promise to every person with a Forbes byline. The practical objective is a relevant reporting conversation, and the source offer should be specific enough for the writer to assess its value.

Pitch the investigation, not a flattering verdict

Lead with the evidence-backed development and why it matters to the writer’s readers. Explain the company’s interest openly, provide a concise evidence summary and offer interviews. Avoid requesting a predetermined positive headline or guaranteed link. Prepare the client for scrutiny of the business model, competitors, limitations and conflicting accounts. Track the response and any additional evidence requested. If the writer declines, determine whether the issue is timing, fit or substance before deciding whether to revise the proposition. A polite rejection can provide useful information without becoming an invitation to argue.

A Forbes reporting proposition

Question

Define the wider business issue.

Evidence

Separate records, estimates and interpretation.

Writer

Match current reporting and a specific information gap.

Access

Offer credible people and room for independent scrutiny.

Sell the quality of preparation and outreach, not a predetermined editorial verdict.

See it in practice

A fictional packaging manufacturer has changed its minimum-order policy after observing a rise in smaller production runs. The agency initially suggests a founder-success profile, then reviews the evidence and finds a more useful business question: how suppliers are adapting to fragmented demand. It documents the order mix over eighteen months, identifies two customers willing to discuss their purchasing decisions and notes that the sample reflects only this manufacturer’s book of business. The shortlist focuses on writers whose recent work examines manufacturing economics and business strategy. The pitch offers records and interviews, not a claim that the company represents the whole economy. Before any interview, the founder rehearses a clear explanation of the pricing trade-off and acknowledges that smaller runs also create scheduling costs.

Compare the alternative

The alternative pitch asks a writer covering investment markets to publish a profile because the founder has an inspiring journey. It includes no financial context, industry evidence or connection to recent reporting. When the writer asks about customer concentration, the agency says that only positive questions are allowed. The problem is not that the company lacks a story; the agency has chosen a mismatched recipient and treated independent reporting as a controlled testimonial.

Avoid this misconception

A broad business audience does not make every business announcement relevant. The angle still needs a current writer match and meaningful evidence. Do not borrow the prestige of the outlet to skip the research you would perform for a specialist publication. The more ambitious the claim, the more carefully its scope needs checking.

Know the boundary

This lesson teaches an agency method for preparing a potential pitch. Forbes writers and editors decide what to pursue and publish. Current staff assignments, contributor roles and contact routes must be checked at campaign time; historical network announcements are context, not a current directory or promise of access.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Prepare the manufacturer’s pitch and a three-source evidence index.

Before you start

Use a document or spreadsheet and the fictional case in this lesson. Public or synthetic evidence is sufficient; no purchase or real outreach is required.

Your steps

  • State the business question without a promotional claim.
  • Define the dataset’s limits and alternative explanations.
  • Write a matched source offer and interview brief.

What better looks like

Before: Define the wider business issue.

After: Offer credible people and room for independent scrutiny.

Your working notes

Notes stay in this browser. Download a copy to keep them.

Verify your work

  • The pitch identifies a current reporting fit.
  • A company sample is not presented as the entire market.
  • The founder can answer the hardest reasonable question.

Follow up

Have a colleague review your decision and evidence. Record the unresolved question, its owner and the next review date before using the plan with a client.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

Your client’s order data show smaller average orders among its own customers. The founder wants to pitch this as proof that all manufacturers are abandoning large production runs, and a relevant Forbes writer asks about the sample. How should you proceed?
