Module 02 / Lesson 05 · Read, apply, check
Identify the exact Forbes route before pricing, pitching or reporting the result.
Forbes hosts different kinds of content under the same recognizable brand. A newsroom report, an independent contributor article, a Council member’s bylined advice and commercial content are different products of different processes. Begin with the live page: inspect the author description, section, disclosure, article format and surrounding labels. Save the URL and date of your check. A screenshot cropped to show only the Forbes logo is insufficient evidence of the route. Your client needs to understand who created the article, who selected the subject and whether a commercial or membership relationship was involved.
Staff reporting and the broader contributor network can both involve editorial work, but the byline alone does not explain every article. Forbes has publicly described a contributor network supported by editors and producers; this is not the same thing as Council membership. Read the individual writer’s current work and role. A relevant journalist or contributor may consider evidence for a story they control. Offering a source is different from purchasing a mention. Never infer that every contributor is selling coverage, and never treat someone’s private placement promise as proof of an authorized editorial arrangement.
Forbes Councils describes membership benefits that include opportunities to submit expertise for publication. Council pages visibly identify the fee-based membership relationship. Commercial BrandVoice content is separately presented with commercial labels, including Paid Program on the example linked below. These distinctions matter even when the finished pages look polished and appear on the same domain. Do not collapse the categories into a package called a Forbes feature. Describe the actual route, any eligibility or editorial review, the party paying, the author and the limits of the offer before the client authorizes spending.
Use a one-page record with route, page example, decision-maker, commercial relationship, client work, likely format and uncertain outcomes. Separate your agency fee from external membership, production or media costs. Specify what the client can approve and what remains outside its control. In a newsroom approach, the client can approve its supplied facts and availability; it cannot approve an independent article as if it were an advertisement. In a membership route, eligibility and content review still matter. A route card prevents sales language from becoming a promise the delivery team cannot honestly fulfill.
A teaching map of the distinctions in this lesson; confirm current terms before proposing any route.
| Route | Who controls the result? | Commercial distinction | Describe it to the client |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newsroom coverage | Editors and journalists | Outreach effort does not purchase editorial acceptance | Independent reporting, if the newsroom chooses to cover it |
| Contributor article | Writer and applicable editorial controls | Contributor status is not permission to sell undisclosed coverage | Identify the author and the actual article route |
| Forbes Councils | Membership programme and its editorial process | Paid membership; membership content carries identifying labels | Paid membership-based contribution, not a newsroom feature |
| Commercial content | Commercial programme and agreed terms | Paid route with commercial labelling | Name the exact paid format and deliverables |
“This option is a paid membership route, subject to eligibility and programme requirements. We will identify the membership and article format clearly in the proposal and reporting.”
A reporter independently evaluates and reports a story.
Read the writer’s role, article and editorial context.
Paid membership with visible membership labelling and content review.
An openly commercial content arrangement with its own labels.
A fictional cybersecurity consultancy asks for a Forbes feature. The agency presents three distinct possibilities rather than quoting a single price. One is an evidence-led pitch to a relevant writer about a documented change in small-business security practices. Another is evaluating a suitable executive’s eligibility for a Council and developing useful bylined advice if the membership route is selected. A third is investigating an openly commercial content option through the appropriate official channel. The client sees example labels and a separate cost category for each route. It chooses editorial outreach first and accepts that the agency is selling research, preparation and outreach effort, not a guaranteed article. The proposal records that membership or commercial activity would require a separate decision and could not be reported as independently earned newsroom coverage.
Another agency sells a guaranteed Forbes story without identifying the route. After payment, the client receives a Council byline written in the executive’s own voice. The sales deck described an independent journalist discovering the company, while the live page identifies membership. The article may contain useful expertise, but the mismatch damages trust because the agency sold a different kind of recognition. Removing the label from a presentation would deepen the misunderstanding rather than resolve it.
A contributor label does not automatically mean paid placement, and a recognizable domain does not automatically mean independently earned coverage. Classification requires the specific page and relationship. When the route is unclear, say so and verify it before quoting a client or counting the outcome in a report.
Publication formats and labels can change. The links below establish examples and official programme descriptions; verify the current page and offer when planning a campaign. Do not promise eligibility, acceptance, links, rankings or a favorable editorial conclusion based on a historic example.

Write route cards for the consultancy’s three possible approaches.
Use a document or spreadsheet and the fictional case in this lesson. Public or synthetic evidence is sufficient; no purchase or real outreach is required.

Before you move on
A supplier offers your agency a guaranteed Forbes article but refuses to identify the author type or section until payment. The client expects a reporter-led profile and asks you to include the logo in the proposal. What is the strongest next decision?
