Module 02 / Lesson 07 · Read, apply, check
Explain the paid Forbes Councils route with visible labels, realistic benefits and clear client expectations.
Forbes Councils is a paid membership route, not independently earned newsroom coverage. Official Council pages identify Membership (fee-based), and the programme describes publication opportunities among its benefits. Tell the client this before recommending an application or quoting an article package. Show an uncropped example page so the disclosure is visible in context. The paid relationship does not make all member expertise worthless; it changes the correct description of how the content came to exist. Honest explanation allows the client to decide whether a member byline serves a real communication objective.
Membership benefits are not a promise that any applicant or any draft will be accepted. Verify the relevant Council’s current eligibility, fees, terms and editorial process through official channels. Do not quote an old fee from a third-party blog as a current offer. Explain what your agency would do: help assess fit, interview the executive, develop an original viewpoint, prepare a draft and manage approved revisions. Distinguish that service from the membership transaction itself. Record which person holds the membership and how the byline relates to that person’s actual experience and expertise.
The strongest use of a member article is to explain an informed decision, practical framework or experience that helps the intended audience. Obtain concrete examples, trade-offs and limits from the executive. Remove unsupported superlatives and disguised sales pitches. Keep the author’s commercial interest visible and follow the current programme’s editorial requirements. A useful article can support a broader thought-leadership effort, but its value should come from substance and audience relevance rather than a misleading claim that a reporter independently endorsed the business. The client should review factual accuracy and voice before submission.
Use a description such as an executive’s Forbes Council member article through a paid membership programme. Adapt the wording to the exact live label and format. Do not change it to an independent Forbes profile in a sales deck, investor brief or monthly report. Keep membership charges and agency production fees separate in the budget. Agree success measures that fit the activity: relevant readership where measurable, use in informed sales conversations, substantive engagement and the quality of the executive’s body of work. Do not treat publication as guaranteed rankings, leads or AI-answer citations.
Paid membership and the visible page label.
Current eligibility, terms and editorial requirements.
Original executive expertise with useful examples.
Name the member byline and measure appropriate outcomes.
A fictional operations consultant wants to build recognition for her approach to supplier negotiations. The agency explains the Council route using a live page with the fee-based membership label visible. It checks the current application requirements and asks the consultant whether the network and bylined expertise opportunity fit her goals. If accepted, the proposed article would explain a negotiation mistake she has seen repeatedly, using anonymized examples she can substantiate. The service proposal separates her membership cost from the agency’s interviewing and editorial work. The reporting template already names the result as a Council member article. The consultant can then compare this route with an independent editorial pitch or another channel without discovering the paid relationship after the work is finished.
A less careful agency promises a Forbes journalist will profile the consultant, collects a premium fee and then ghostwrites a Council article in her name. It presents a screenshot with the membership label cropped away and calls the outcome third-party endorsement. Even if the advice is accurate, the client has not received the route she expected. The agency has turned a potentially legitimate expertise programme into a trust problem through its own description.
Paid membership does not equal an unrestricted right to publish anything, and it does not turn a member into a Forbes newsroom reporter. Conversely, being honest about the route does not require dismissing useful expertise. Assess whether the specific audience, author and content justify the total cost on their actual merits.
Labels and membership offers may evolve. Verify the live wording and official terms for the relevant Council when preparing a proposal. Do not present a generic price, automatic acceptance or a member article as an independently commissioned report about the client.

Before you move on
A client asks whether paying for a Council membership means a Forbes reporter has selected her business for independent coverage. Your salesperson worries that a direct answer will reduce the sale. Which explanation should be given before the client decides?
