Module 02 / Lesson 08 · Read, apply, check
Repair a route mismatch with a clear explanation, corrected records and a practical client decision.
When a client discovers that a supposed editorial feature was membership or commercial content, do not begin by defending the domain’s prestige. Identify the exact expectation created by the proposal, call or report and compare it with the actual live page. Collect the original scope, cost breakdown, disclosure and correspondence. Acknowledge the mismatch in direct language. If the agency’s description was inaccurate, say what was inaccurate rather than suggesting the client should have understood an obscure label. Trust improves when the client can see that the agency has understood the substance of the problem.
Show the complete page and describe its author, section, membership or commercial relationship and approval process. Separate factual content quality from the inaccurate claim about independence. An article may still explain valuable expertise, but that does not justify calling it something it is not. Avoid saying everyone in the industry does it or that the distinction never matters to readers. Ask what the client intended to achieve: investor credibility, customer education, executive authority or independent validation. That objective determines whether the actual result is useful, insufficient or inappropriate for the planned use.
Correct agency-controlled proposals, case studies, reports and promotional claims that repeat the mistake. Agree accurate language for the client’s use and identify any third-party material that needs a correction request. Review the commercial scope and discuss an appropriate remedy with the decision-maker who can authorize it. Options may include additional evidence-led outreach, revised content work, a fee adjustment or ending a misaligned activity. Do not promise a future newsroom feature as compensation unless the promise is limited to work the agency controls. Record the agreed action, owner, deadline and remaining uncertainty.
Require route cards in proposals and preserve them through delivery and reporting. Give sales staff a short vocabulary that distinguishes reporter-led coverage, contributed expertise, paid membership and commercial content. Use real uncropped examples in training. Review a sample of client-facing claims before launch and after publication. Track route-related complaints separately from normal content revisions so management can identify a recurring problem. The objective is not more paperwork; it is consistency between what is sold, what is delivered and what the client tells its own audience about the result.

Carry route descriptions from sales through reporting.
A fictional founder believes an agency secured an independent Forbes profile. During fundraising preparation, an adviser notices the Council membership label. The account director reviews the proposal and finds that it used the phrase independent feature without qualification. She acknowledges that wording was wrong, explains the actual member-byline route and helps the founder correct the investor deck. The article remains available as the founder’s published expertise, with an accurate description. The agency then reviews fees and agrees a documented remedy for the scope mismatch. It offers a separate research and outreach plan based on the company’s genuine operating evidence, with no promise of editorial acceptance. Sales templates are updated so the next client sees the route before authorizing work.
The opposite response tells the founder that investors never read labels and suggests hiding the Council reference. The agency offers another guaranteed prestige logo to calm the complaint. This compounds the original mismatch, creates new unsupported expectations and leaves the founder exposed to another uncomfortable conversation. A short-term attempt to protect the sale can make a recoverable mistake look like an intentional pattern of misrepresentation.
Restoring trust is not achieved by simply changing a noun in the next report. The client needs an acknowledgement, an explanation of what the result can honestly support and a remedy proportionate to the actual agreement. Good content quality does not cancel an inaccurate description of the route through which it appeared.
Use the actual contract and authorized decision-makers when discussing fees or remedies. This lesson offers a client-service method, not a legal conclusion about a particular dispute. Do not change a third-party article or claim a correction has happened until the responsible publisher confirms the change.

An investor has challenged your client’s claim of independent Forbes coverage because the page is a Council member article. Your proposal used the same inaccurate wording, and the client is angry. Which response offers the best chance of restoring trust?
