Executive insight · SEO / PR / GEO
The shift is already happening. Leadership’s next move is to update the scorecard.
Working with more than 500 agencies, Sitetrail has observed a striking change: before generative search, just 3% of SEO specialists we encountered were receptive to unlinked brand mentions. Today, that figure is 25%.
These are observations from our agency relationships, not a representative industry survey. They nevertheless signal a meaningful change in what practitioners consider valuable coverage.
01 / Build a broader citation map
An unlinked mention is not a backlink and does not pass PageRank. Its potential value lies in context: what your company does, which problems it solves, and which credible sources discuss it.
For generative engine optimization (GEO), that distinction matters. Ahrefs’ research across 75,000 brands found strong correlations between branded web mentions and visibility in AI answers. It does not establish that purchasing unlinked mentions causes citations.
The opportunity is a broader “citation map”: relevant, accessible sources that explain your brand and provide material AI search systems could reference. Teams that dismiss coverage without links should give credible unlinked mentions a larger role. There is no universal ideal percentage.
The anchor-text lesson applies. Insisting on keyword-rich anchors encouraged manipulation; Google’s spam policies identify optimized anchors in distributed articles among link-spam practices. Keywords alone are not the problem. Prioritizing a controllable signal over quality and business outcomes is.
02 / Two brands, one commercial lesson
Case example 01
Airbnb
In its 2020 annual report, Airbnb credited brand strength and communications with reducing reliance on performance marketing. The strategic lesson: reputation and recognition can create value a backlink report cannot fully capture.
Case example 02
Spotify
More than 225 million monthly active users engaged with Wrapped in 2023. Our takeaway: proprietary data, turned into stories people want to share, gives a brand reasons to be discussed beyond its own website.
These examples illustrate broader communications value; neither isolates the SEO or AI-citation impact of unlinked mentions.
03 / Bring SEO and PR closer together
SEO contributes audience intent, technical discoverability and measurement. PR contributes news judgment, credible narratives and media relationships. AI search strengthens their shared objective: making a brand discoverable and accurately understood.
For small companies, one capable marketer can oversee both. AI can support research, monitoring, drafting and reporting, making the workload more manageable. Human judgment still governs accuracy, relationships and reputation.
