Clarify the inventory state

Ask whether the item is temporarily unavailable, discontinued, replaced or merely seasonal. Those states imply different customer expectations. Do not remove a useful page automatically when stock reaches zero, and do not keep presenting an unavailable item as immediately purchasable.

Preserve useful information

A temporary stock gap may still justify specifications, manuals, availability information and relevant alternatives. Make the state clear and avoid fabricated restock dates. If an item is retired, consider whether existing customers still need instructions or compatibility information at that URL.

Choose replacements carefully

A genuinely equivalent replacement can justify a clear transition and, where appropriate, a permanent redirect. An unrelated category or homepage is not automatically equivalent. Explain alternatives honestly so customers understand differences in size, compatibility, price or function before proceeding.

Synchronize and monitor

Update visible availability, structured data, feeds and internal merchandising together. Check old inbound journeys and important support links after a change. Preserve a record of the treatment and owner so the next stock update does not accidentally revive an obsolete offer.

Unavailable does not describe one situation

Temporary gap

Keep useful information and state availability accurately.

Retired with support need

Explain retirement while preserving relevant instructions.

Equivalent replacement

Evaluate a clear transition and appropriate permanent destination.

No useful equivalent

Do not disguise an unrelated homepage as the same answer.

Inventory state and continuing customer needs jointly determine treatment.

See it in practice

Hypothetical example: a kitchen retailer has a temporarily unavailable mixer and a discontinued attachment. The mixer page retains accurate specifications, clearly states its stock status and offers a notification option without inventing a delivery date. The attachment page still contains a useful compatibility guide for existing owners, so the team retains that information and explains that sales have ended. A newer attachment is linked as an alternative only after compatibility differences are documented. The marketer checks that structured availability and merchandising links agree with the page. The two items receive different treatments because their customer purposes and inventory states differ, not because all unavailable products follow one rule.

Compare the alternative

A retailer redirects every unavailable product to the homepage overnight. Customers following saved manuals or product references lose the expected information, and temporarily unavailable products cannot explain their return. The redirects technically resolve, but the journeys become less useful. A product-state inventory would have separated short-term stock gaps, genuine replacements and permanently removed items before any rule affected the whole catalog.

Avoid this misconception

Misconception: every out-of-stock URL should disappear. Stock status is an operational condition, while the usefulness of a page may include research and support. Choose the treatment from both the item’s future and the reader’s task.

Know the boundary

There is no universal choice for every discontinued item. Inventory scale, equivalent replacements and continuing support needs matter. Coordinate bulk changes with merchandising and technical owners, and test a sample before applying a catalog-wide policy.

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Choose a customer-focused treatment for temporary stock gaps and permanently retired product URLs.

Before you start

Three product states from a catalog or the fictional examples in this lesson.

Practise with this scenario

Mixer: temporary stock gap, no confirmed restock date. Attachment: discontinued, manual still useful. Replacement attachment: similar purpose but different compatibility.

Your steps

  • Classify each product as temporary, retired or replacement and record the operational evidence for that status.
  • List the remaining customer needs at each URL, including support, specifications and compatibility.
  • Draft the availability message and alternative links without promising an unconfirmed restock or equivalent fit.
  • Check the proposed response/redirect, markup, feed and internal links for consistency with that decision.
  • Test a saved product link and a manual link as an existing customer, then document the owner and next review trigger.

What better looks like

Before: Every unavailable product redirects to the homepage.

After: Temporary availability is clear; retired support information remains useful; alternatives disclose differences.

Verify your work

  • Temporary and permanent states are distinguished.
  • Alternative products are accurately described.
  • Existing-customer journeys and machine-readable availability agree.

Follow up

Recheck when stock returns, a replacement changes or support obligations end; do not leave the decision as an unowned one-time edit.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A temporarily unavailable mixer may return, while a discontinued attachment still has a useful manual and a newer version with different compatibility. The retailer proposes redirecting both old URLs to its homepage. What should the SEO lead recommend instead?
