Use a distributed press release for a specific announcement and measure its supporting role accurately.
A press release can provide an approved factual account of an announcement and make that information available through a distribution route. Define what the client needs it to accomplish: a consistent public reference, accessible announcement details or support for a coordinated launch. Do not begin with a promise that distribution automatically creates independent reporting. A release can be useful even when its role is limited, provided the client understands that role. Identify the intended audience and the information they should be able to find, then decide whether distribution adds enough value beyond the client’s own channels.
Lead with the actual development, date and practical consequence. Include precise facts, an authentic approved quote, relevant background and a contact who can answer questions. Remove unsupported superlatives and make forward-looking plans distinguishable from completed events. Link to a useful destination when appropriate, and verify names, numbers, permissions and product availability. Keep one approved version as the source for all distribution. A release should be understandable on its own, but it should also help a journalist or stakeholder locate the evidence and people needed for a deeper conversation.
If the agency has agreed advance access, exclusivity or an embargo, align the release schedule with those commitments. Confirm the date, time zone and partner dependencies before submission. A release sent too early can undermine a genuine reporting opportunity; a late or contradictory version can confuse the public record. Keep tailored pitches separate from the distribution submission. Direct outreach can offer a distinct angle, data, interviews or a demonstration that the release does not contain. The supporting route should make those efforts easier, not replace the work of finding and helping the right reporter.
Review the distribution report and check representative live pages. Distinguish repeated or syndicated copies from articles involving independent reporting. Record actual URLs, availability, factual accuracy and any measurable referral activity. Do not present a distribution network’s total potential audience as confirmed readers of the client’s release. If a journalist develops an original story after seeing the announcement, record that separately with evidence of the connection where known. Compare the result with the release’s original job: did it create a reliable reference, reach a relevant channel or support the coordinated launch as intended?
A clear announcement and a useful public reference.
Approved details, quotes, destinations and contact.
Alignment with interviews, access agreements and partners.
Copies, original reporting and observed response separated.
A fictional regional manufacturer announces a new apprenticeship programme. The agency prepares an approved release with the application dates, eligibility information, training location and a contact. It coordinates the release with a separate pitch offering interviews with the training lead and an apprentice who has agreed to speak. The release provides a consistent reference that local stakeholders can share. The reporting opportunity is the company’s response to a documented skills shortage, supported by additional evidence and interviews. After distribution, the agency records the release copies separately from a reporter’s original article and checks that the application link works. The client can see both the factual announcement function and the additional value created by the agency’s own outreach.
A weaker plan distributes a vague announcement, calls every repeated copy a unique newsroom feature and promises that hundreds of journalists have personally endorsed the programme. It publishes before the application page is ready and before a promised exclusive interview. The activity creates confusion for readers and a broken commitment for the reporter. Counting more URLs cannot compensate for an inaccurate public reference or a poorly coordinated launch.
A distributed release is not worthless because it is not independent reporting. Its value depends on the job assigned to it and the quality of execution. Equally, distribution does not become earned coverage because the same text appears on recognizable sites. Keep the route and the evidence of actual audience response clear.
Check the current distribution offer, submission requirements and timing options before purchase. Do not assume that an ordinary commercial distribution service satisfies a company’s formal regulatory disclosure obligations. For such announcements, the client’s appropriate specialist should determine the required process and review the wording.

Prepare a release brief and reporting categories for the apprenticeship announcement.
Use a document or spreadsheet and the fictional case in this lesson. Public or synthetic evidence is sufficient; no purchase or real outreach is required.
Before: A clear announcement and a useful public reference.
After: Copies, original reporting and observed response separated.

Have a colleague review your decision and evidence. Record the unresolved question, its owner and the next review date before using the plan with a client.
Before you move on
Your apprenticeship release has appeared on twenty sites with substantially identical text. A separate reporter has interviewed the training lead and written an original article. The client asks whether this means twenty-one independent editorial endorsements. How should you explain the result?
