Define who the article should reach

The Guest Post Marketplace lets customers hand-pick from thousands of publications and retain control over their campaign choices. Start with audience, topic, geography, language and budget rather than a prestige score alone. Write the intended reader and the action or understanding the content should support. A technical explanation for procurement managers needs a different setting from a consumer lifestyle story. The selection should be explainable in business terms: why people who matter to the client would find the publication and the article relevant. A large inventory is useful when the agency applies a clear selection method.

Inspect the publication beyond a metric

Review recent articles, editorial focus, visible audience cues and the type of placement being offered. Check the current listing and clarify any uncertain requirements before purchase. Third-party authority or traffic estimates can help screen options, but they are not guarantees of readership, leads or ranking improvement. Look for evidence that the proposed topic belongs in the publication. Consider whether the content will appear in a relevant section and whether the site’s current material provides a credible environment for the client. Record what you actually checked and avoid turning an estimate into a promise.

Compare the full campaign fit and terms

Build a shortlist with price, audience rationale, content requirements, expected process, link treatment and any stated conditions. Verify current availability and the exact offer because inventory and terms can change. Choose a few strong matches rather than buying the cheapest available sites simply to inflate a count. The agency remains responsible for the story quality, factual accuracy and campaign coherence. If a placement is paid, describe the relationship accurately and ensure appropriate disclosure and link qualification. Google’s guidance identifies sponsored as the preferred qualification for paid links; follow the actual publication arrangement and current guidance.

Control the message and evaluate the result

Prepare an original article that serves the selected audience and uses verified client evidence. Maintain a clear approval version, then review the live page against the agreed scope: title, facts, attribution, links where included and placement context. Record any issue and follow the provider’s correction process. Measure relevant referral activity, engagement or enquiries where the data support it. Keep the Marketplace route distinct from independent editorial outreach and from Sitetrail’s managed monthly programme. Here the customer chooses publications and controls the campaign; a managed service involves a different allocation of strategic and execution responsibility.

See it in practice

A fictional industrial training company has a limited budget and wants to reach maintenance managers. The agency compares three Marketplace candidates. One has a larger general audience but little industrial coverage; another is cheaper but its recent articles are unrelated to the client’s subject; the third has a clear maintenance readership and relevant examples. The agency chooses the third after checking the current offer and content requirements. It develops an article about a documented training mistake, with a practical checklist and an accurately described client example. The client approves the audience rationale and budget before purchase. After publication, the agency verifies the live content and reports the placement route and measurable referral activity without promising that the selected site will produce a particular ranking or sales result.

Compare the alternative

Another team sorts only by the largest authority score and buys several unrelated placements. It sends identical promotional copy to each and reports the estimated site traffic as the number of people who read the client’s article. The resulting dashboard looks impressive but does not establish audience exposure or campaign fit. A screening metric has been mistaken for an outcome, and the client’s control over selection has not been used thoughtfully.

Avoid this misconception

Control means making informed choices, not controlling every downstream result. Selecting a publication and approving an article does not guarantee readership, search ranking or enquiries. Use metrics as context, keep the audience rationale visible and evaluate the actual result rather than assuming a large site estimate belongs to the client’s page.

Know the boundary

Verify the current listing, availability, disclosure and link terms before committing. Paid placements should be described as such, and appropriate link attributes should be retained. Do not confuse hand-picked Marketplace activity with earned newsroom coverage or with a Sitetrail-managed monthly programme.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Create a three-publication comparison for the industrial training client.

Before you start

Use a document or spreadsheet and the fictional case in this lesson. Public or synthetic evidence is sufficient; no purchase or real outreach is required.

Your steps

  • Define the reader and article purpose.
  • Compare relevance, current terms and budget.
  • Write the selection rationale and live-review checklist.

What better looks like

Before: Who should read this and why this publication fits.

After: Client-approved selection, live review and measured results.

Your working notes

Notes stay in this browser. Download a copy to keep them.

Verify your work

  • Site estimates are not reported as article readership.
  • The choice is justified by audience and relevance.
  • The route, disclosure and link treatment are clear.

Follow up

Have a colleague review your decision and evidence. Record the unresolved question, its owner and the next review date before using the plan with a client.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A Marketplace option has a high authority score but little relevant content. A smaller option closely matches your client’s maintenance-manager audience and budget. The salesperson wants to report the larger site’s estimated monthly traffic as guaranteed article views. What should you recommend?
