Module 01 / Lesson 03 · Read, apply, check
Match the page’s purpose to the decision implied by a search instead of chasing a keyword in isolation.
A query is a short expression of a task. Someone searching for warehouse picking errors may want a definition, a diagnosis, a comparison of remedies or software to buy. Those jobs require different content. Begin by writing the decision the searcher is trying to make, then identify what evidence and format would help complete it.
Inspect the current results for patterns in page type, depth, geography and commercial emphasis. These patterns provide clues about how the query is interpreted. They do not require copying competitors or guarantee that the dominant format will remain unchanged. Combine the observation with customer conversations and your own product or service knowledge.
Queries sharing a phrase can still imply different needs. A tutorial about exporting accounting data differs from a comparison of accounting systems, even if both mention the same software. Conversely, minor wording variations may describe one task and belong on one comprehensive page. Page boundaries should follow meaningful differences in user needs.
A useful page meets the immediate need and offers a sensible next action. An educational guide may lead to a checklist or related explanation before a sales enquiry. A pricing page should make commercial details easy to find. Pushing every visitor into a demo can create friction when the visitor has not yet understood the problem.
Understand → an explanation with a useful example.
Compare → criteria, tradeoffs and relevant evidence.
Evaluate a purchase → current commercial details and conditions.
Resolve a fault → safe, specific troubleshooting and escalation limits.
Illustrative case: a warehouse consultancy considers targeting the phrase picking accuracy. Customer interviews reveal that operations managers first want to calculate their error rate, then understand common causes. Search results include explanatory guides and measurement resources. The team creates a page with a clearly defined formula, a worked example, common interpretation mistakes and a practical diagnostic checklist. It offers a consultation only after the reader can assess their situation. A separate service page explains the consultancy’s process, experience and engagement scope. The team measures whether the guide attracts relevant queries and whether visitors use the diagnostic next step. It does not force the informational guide to behave like a sales page simply because the business ultimately sells consulting.
Consider a competing team that produces separate thin pages for picking accuracy, warehouse picking accuracy and order picking accuracy without identifying different tasks. The pages repeat the same explanation and all push a demo immediately. The result is fragmented maintenance and an unclear destination for the user. A stronger structure would consolidate overlapping intent while retaining separate pages only where the customer question or offered service is genuinely different.
The misconception is that search volume alone identifies the best opportunity. A popular phrase can attract people who cannot use the offering or are at a different stage. Relevance and a useful next step matter alongside demand.
Some queries have mixed intent, and result patterns vary by location or device. A single observation is not conclusive. Document ambiguity and consider a page that serves related needs without becoming unfocused.

Select three related queries. Write the task behind each, inspect representative results and compare those observations with actual customer language. Decide whether the queries belong on one page or several. Explain the page boundary using user needs rather than small differences in wording.
Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.
Queries: sofa dimensions, compact sofa for a studio, Oak Room sofa delivery time.
Before: One thin page for every slightly different phrase.
After: Pages grouped around distinct customer decisions.
