Start with the customer decision

A customer may discover a problem in a news story, research solutions in search, compare providers in an AI answer and return directly to purchase. Organize marketing around those decisions. Channel labels are useful for allocating work, but the customer’s journey does not respect departmental boundaries or a tidy sequence of attributed clicks.

SEO and SEM serve different timing needs

Organic search work improves the discoverability and usefulness of owned content over time. Paid search buys eligible opportunities to appear for selected searches, subject to auction and policy conditions. A new campaign may use paid traffic to test an offer while the team improves organic pages. Paid visibility does not purchase organic ranking credit.

PR builds reasons to be discussed

Public relations brings news judgment, expert perspectives and relationships with relevant audiences and media. Coverage can produce recognition or credibility even without a clickable link. The useful question is whether the story helps the intended audience understand something meaningful about the business. Counting links alone misses some of that communications value.

GEO adds another discovery surface

Generative engine optimization concerns how a brand or source may be discovered and represented in AI-mediated answers. It overlaps with accessible content, clear evidence, consistent identity and relevant independent discussion. Keep platform differences visible. A mention, a source citation and a referral visit are separate observations, and none should be treated as a promised consequence of a campaign.

One buyer, complementary channel roles

Discover a problem · PR

An expert’s evidence reaches a relevant trade audience. Observe coverage and accurate recognition.

Research options · SEO

A useful guide is discoverable in search. Observe relevant exposure, visits and task completion.

Compare now · SEM

A truthful ad offers a suitable next step. Observe qualified response and acquisition economics.

Ask an assistant · GEO

Clear, credible sources may inform an answer. Observe mention, citation and accuracy separately.

Illustrative journey; buyers can move between channels in different orders, and not every influence is observable.

See it in practice

Illustrative case: a small accounting software company wants more enquiries from independent retailers. Its SEO team develops a clear guide to reconciling daily card payments. Paid search tests two landing-page messages against high-intent queries with a defined spending limit. The PR lead offers an expert explanation of a documented reconciliation problem to a relevant trade publication. The team checks whether AI answers about that problem describe its product accurately, recording prompts and dates. Each activity has a separate immediate measure: useful organic impressions, qualified paid leads, relevant coverage and observed AI representation. The shared business outcome is qualified sales conversations. This plan avoids claiming that one article caused every later enquiry or that paid clicks directly improved organic positions.

Compare the alternative

A weaker plan buys the same generic article on unrelated sites, runs broad advertisements to the homepage and reports the combined traffic as proof of improved reputation. The activities share a budget but not a customer problem. The team cannot explain which visitors were qualified, what the coverage communicated or why the chosen destination helped a retailer. Coordination requires a common objective and distinct evidence, not merely placing several channel names in one presentation.

Avoid this misconception

The mistaken habit is treating SEO, PR and GEO as interchangeable labels for buying links. Their workflows overlap, but their immediate outputs and measurement limits differ. Clear responsibilities make collaboration more effective.

Know the boundary

A local emergency service may prioritize immediate calls and location information; a complex enterprise product may need months of education and trust-building. The channel mix should reflect the purchase decision, urgency and resources.

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Map one customer problem across discovery, evaluation and action. Assign a channel, useful content asset, responsible person and observable measure to each stage. Then identify one handoff that currently fails, such as relevant coverage sending readers to an unhelpful homepage.

Before you start

Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.

Practise with this scenario

A buyer discovers a software problem in search, reads expert coverage and then requests a demonstration.

Your steps

  • Draw discovery, evaluation and action as three rows.
  • Assign SEO, paid search, PR or GEO where each can serve the actual customer question; allow more than one channel where justified.
  • Choose one useful asset and destination for each row, avoiding a generic homepage when a specific answer is needed.
  • Record an owner and observable measure for each handoff, and mark any part of the journey you cannot directly observe.

What better looks like

Before: Every channel sends every visitor to the homepage.

After: Each stage has a useful destination and a distinct observable outcome.

Verify your work

  • The customer problem is specific.
  • Each channel has a distinct job and measure.
  • The shared commercial outcome is defined.

Follow up

Test one handoff as a new customer and repair the first information or navigation gap you encounter.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A software owner wants to combine SEO, paid search, PR and GEO in one campaign. The team proposes reporting every resulting impression as a lead and promising that purchased advertising will improve organic rankings. What should the owner change first?
