Describe the observed problem

State the affected page or template, customer consequence and evidence. Separate observations from hypotheses. “Improve E-E-A-T” or “fix SEO” is too broad to guide a specific change unless translated into an actual defect or missing information.

Specify the desired behavior

Explain what should happen after the change, with examples and boundaries. An editorial ticket might require a verified author contribution and source corrections; a technical ticket might require a stable canonical and successful destination. Avoid prescribing unnecessary implementation details when the specialist can choose a better method.

Make acceptance observable

Write checks that another person can perform. Include a normal case, an important edge case and a regression check where relevant. “Looks professional” is subjective; “the reviewed price matches the visible offer and structured data” gives a concrete comparison.

Manage review and handoff

Assign an implementer, reviewer and due date, and record dependencies. Consolidate feedback so collaborators do not receive contradictory requests. Close the ticket only when the acceptance evidence is attached or recorded, not simply when someone reports that work was attempted.

From broad ambition to accepted work

Problem

Eight pages contain an outdated delivery promise.

Expected change

Use the verified current operational policy.

Checks

Normal product + unavailable item + unaffected page.

Acceptance

Reviewer records published evidence before closure.

A strategic objective becomes actionable when the desired behavior can be checked.

See it in practice

Hypothetical example: an SEO review finds that eight product pages display an old delivery promise copied from a template. The director writes a ticket with two affected examples, the current operational policy and the expected replacement wording. It requires the content owner to confirm accuracy, the engineer to update the shared component and a reviewer to check a normal product, an unavailable item and a page outside the affected range. The ticket also asks for consistent supporting markup where relevant. Completion means the published behavior matches those checks. The recommendation has moved from “improve trust” to a bounded change with evidence, responsibilities and a way to detect unintended effects.

Compare the alternative

Another team receives a task called “make the site more authoritative” with no affected pages, evidence or acceptance criteria. The designer adds a badge, the writer expands biographies and the developer changes navigation, but nobody knows whether the original issue was addressed. A useful ticket would first identify the specific trust gap, such as unsupported claims or missing ownership information, and define the correction that can actually be verified.

Avoid this misconception

Misconception: detailed tickets require controlling every specialist decision. Precision about the problem and acceptance criteria can coexist with flexibility about implementation. Define the outcome and constraints, then let the qualified collaborator propose the best method.

Know the boundary

Some discoveries require investigation before a fix can be specified. In that case, create a diagnostic ticket with a clear evidence deliverable and decision deadline. Do not invent a solution merely to make the backlog appear implementation-ready.

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Turn a strategic recommendation into a deliverable that a collaborator can implement and verify.

Before you start

One observed page issue and its owner, or the outdated-delivery-template example.

Practise with this scenario

Eight product pages promise delivery that operations no longer provides. Two example URLs and the verified current policy are available; the wording comes from a shared component.

Your steps

  • Write the observed behavior, affected scope and customer consequence separately from your suspected technical cause.
  • Specify the verified replacement behavior and link the operational source that supports it.
  • Create acceptance checks for a normal product, an unavailable item and an unaffected page.
  • Assign implementer and reviewer, record dependencies and agree how the evidence will be returned.
  • Draft the completion note with before/after examples and leave unresolved issues visible instead of closing the ticket on verbal assurance alone.

What better looks like

Before: “Improve trust and authority.”

After: Replace a verified outdated delivery promise on eight pages and pass named acceptance checks.

Verify your work

  • The problem is evidenced and bounded.
  • Acceptance checks are observable.
  • An implementer and reviewer own the handoff.

Follow up

Review the published evidence after completion and add the source-of-truth check to future template releases so the defect does not recur.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A director identifies an outdated delivery promise on eight product pages generated by one component. The team suggests a task called “improve authority” and wants to close it when the component is edited. What would make the work genuinely reviewable and complete?
