Establish the real business model

Confirm whether customers visit a genuine staffed location or the business travels to customers. Check the current eligibility rules before creating a profile. A marketing preference for a city does not establish a real office, and an online-only business is not automatically eligible.

Use evidence for public details

Compare the real-world name, address or service area, contact information and hours with the profile. Use signage, operations records and the responsible owner to resolve discrepancies. Do not add service keywords to the business name merely because a competitor appears to do so.

Choose accurate categories

Select the most relevant available primary category and only useful additional categories that describe the business. Categories are not a list of target search phrases. A service business operating from a residence needs particular attention to address display and service-area requirements.

Plan controlled corrections

Separate confirmed errors from uncertain claims and record the owner of each proposed edit. Review the current verification and access process. Avoid duplicate profiles as a shortcut around an unresolved ownership problem; retain evidence and follow the official resolution route.

Let the business model determine the profile

Customers visit

Check a genuine staffed location and customer-facing hours.

Business visits customers

Check service-area rules and appropriate address visibility.

Mailing address only

A mailbox is not evidence of a public workshop.

Public identity

Use the real name and accurate operational details.

The same city target does not make different business models interchangeable.

See it in practice

Hypothetical example: a mobile bicycle mechanic works from home and visits customers. The website uses the trading name “Spoke Care,” but a proposed profile calls the company “Best Emergency Bike Repairs City Centre.” The owner also wants to display a rented mailing address as a workshop. The marketer checks the actual operation, replaces the proposed name with the genuine trading name and prepares an appropriate service-area setup without presenting the mailing address as a customer-facing shop. She confirms the telephone number and real service hours with the owner. The deliverable is an evidence-backed correction sheet, not a promise to appear first on the map for every neighborhood.

Compare the alternative

A separate bicycle shop has a staffed storefront where customers can bring repairs during published hours. Its profile may appropriately represent that location when it meets the rules. Applying the mobile mechanic’s hidden-address arrangement automatically would fail to reflect the different business. The decision comes from how customers are actually served, not from a rule that every local business should display or hide an address.

Avoid this misconception

Misconception: adding city and service keywords to the name is a harmless optimization. If they are not part of the real-world business name, the change can misrepresent the business and create policy problems.

Know the boundary

Eligibility, verification and categories can change. Use current official guidance for a live account. If you do not own or manage the business, prepare an audit only and ask the authorized owner to apply confirmed corrections.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Create an accurate Business Profile correction sheet without inventing locations or keyword-stuffed names.

Before you start

Owner-confirmed business details and profile access, or the fictional mobile-mechanic scenario.

Practise with this scenario

Spoke Care visits customers, has no public workshop and uses a home address. The draft profile lists a rented mailbox and an invented keyword-heavy name.

Your steps

  • Classify the operation as storefront, service-area or hybrid using actual customer access, staffing and service delivery.
  • Compare the proposed name and location with owner evidence. Flag the mailbox and invented promotional name in separate rows.
  • Choose an accurate category from the live selector if you have access; record why it describes the core business.
  • Draft corrections for name, address display, service area, telephone and hours without creating a duplicate profile.
  • Ask the owner to confirm the sheet, apply only authorized changes and verify their status through the official profile workflow.

What better looks like

Before: “Best Emergency Bike Repairs City Centre” at a mailbox

After: “Spoke Care” represented according to its actual mobile service model

Notes stay in this browser. Download a copy to keep them.

Verify your work

  • The profile model matches how customers are served.
  • Name and contact details have owner evidence.
  • No invented location or duplicate profile is proposed.

Follow up

Recheck displayed details after approved changes and before holiday periods; keep unresolved verification questions separate from ranking observations.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A mobile mechanic visits customers and has no customer-facing workshop. A marketer proposes a keyword-heavy name and a rented mailbox address to improve local visibility. The real trading name is Spoke Care. What should the profile audit recommend first?
