Module 03 / Lesson 10 · Read, apply, check
Evaluate a placement’s contribution when direct traffic or a backlink is absent, without inventing SEO value.
A placement can have several intended jobs: reaching a specific audience, explaining expertise, supporting a sales conversation or introducing a credible source. A backlink is one possible feature, not a universal definition of success. Start with the objective agreed before purchase or outreach. If the client explicitly bought a verified link-bearing deliverable, its absence is a delivery issue to investigate. If the work sought relevant independent reporting, a useful quotation without a link may still meet part of the goal. Do not change the success criterion after the result merely to make every outcome look positive.
Inspect what the article actually says, where the brand appears and whether the intended audience is plausibly relevant. A passing name in an unrelated list differs from a substantive explanation of the client’s expertise. Note message accuracy, quotation context, prominence and the practical question the piece helps readers answer. Distinguish these observed qualities from assumptions about who read it. A publication may be prestigious but poorly matched to the client’s buyers. Conversely, a specialist outlet may provide useful context for a small audience. The report should explain the fit rather than relying on the outlet’s reputation alone.
Ask whether the article appears in prospect conversations, sales feedback, relevant referral patterns or customer interviews. These signals can suggest a contribution even when direct tracking is incomplete. Use permitted links to the article in sales-support material where appropriate, preserving the context and avoiding implied endorsement. For SEO and GEO, do not treat an unlinked mention as proof of a ranking improvement or future AI citation. Observe search and answer-system behaviour separately and describe the limitations. A credible brand reference can be useful without the agency claiming to know exactly how every external system values it.
Compare the placement’s observed qualities and usable contribution with its cost, effort and opportunity cost. A relevant article that helps sales explain a complex offer may justify further testing. A weak mention with no identifiable audience fit may suggest that the route should change. Record what evidence would strengthen or weaken the decision at the next review. If a promised link is missing, check the actual terms and pursue a correction through the proper channel; do not demand an editorial change by pretending the journalist owes the agency a commercial deliverable. Evaluation should preserve both the original commitment and the independence of the route.
What was the item meant to accomplish?
Is the message accurate and audience relevant?
What response or practical use can be observed?
Repeat, improve, stop or resolve a missing term.
A fictional engineering consultancy is quoted in a specialist article about maintenance failures. The article contains no backlink, but accurately explains the firm’s diagnostic method. The campaign objective was credibility with maintenance directors, not a guaranteed link. Over the following month, two prospects mention the article during calls, and the sales team uses its public URL as supporting context in a permitted follow-up. The agency reports those observations and the article’s audience fit, while noting that it cannot attribute a completed sale or a search-ranking change to the mention. It recommends another evidence-led pitch to the same audience, with a review of whether similar conversations follow. In a separate paid placement where a link was explicitly included in the supplier’s terms, the agency opens a delivery query. It does not use the first article’s broader value to excuse the second supplier’s missing commitment.
Another agency claims that every unlinked mention automatically increases search authority and guarantees inclusion in AI answers. It offers no observed search evidence and ignores whether the article reaches relevant readers. When the client asks about a missing contracted link, the agency repeats the same generic authority argument. This confuses a possible marketing contribution with a specific delivery obligation and replaces evaluation with an outcome claim the agency cannot verify.
No immediate click does not prove no value, but neither does publication prove meaningful value. The responsible middle ground is to inspect the content, look for audience and sales signals, and keep the original objective visible. Treat uncertain contribution as uncertain rather than forcing a binary success story around every item.
Respect publisher reuse rights and editorial independence. Search and AI systems do not provide a simple guaranteed conversion from a mention to a ranking or citation. Evaluate actual evidence and supplier commitments separately, and avoid inventing a monetary equivalent for credibility that the client has not agreed how to assess.

Ask a colleague to challenge the assumptions. Record the decision, the evidence still needed, its owner and a review date before applying the plan to a real agency.
Before you move on
A relevant earned article quotes your client accurately but has no link. Two prospects mention reading it. A separate paid placement also lacks a link that its terms included. How should the agency evaluate and explain these different results to the client?
