Airbnb’s 2021 host-centred campaign illustrates an educational role for brand investment; use the case to clarify channel jobs rather than copying another company’s spending mix.
A discussion about brand and performance marketing often becomes a contest over which deserves more money. The more useful question is what customers still need to understand and which activity can help them understand it.
Airbnb’s 2021 communications provide a specific example. The company presented brand marketing as a way to explain what made its experience different, with hosts at the centre of the story.
That is a clearer job than asking a campaign to create general awareness and later searching the dashboard for a number that justifies it.
The documented approach
Airbnb launched Made Possible by Hosts on 22 February 2021. The campaign connected hosts with the experiences guests could have through the service.
On the company’s 13 May 2021 earnings call, Brian Chesky described an integrated approach involving PR, brand marketing and performance marketing, and characterised marketing’s role as education.
Those statements establish management’s intended approach. They are not a controlled demonstration of the campaign’s incremental return, and the case should not be converted into a rule that another company can cut or expand a channel by the same proportion.
Airbnb had its own recognition, customer base, marketplace structure and circumstances. A lesser-known company may face a very different demand problem.
Education can be commercial
Customers may know a brand name without understanding the offer. They may misunderstand who the product is for, what the experience involves or why it differs from a familiar alternative.
An educational brand campaign can address that gap while building a memorable association. It does not have to resemble a tutorial; it needs to make a relevant product truth easier to understand and remember.
For a hypothetical specialist insurer, the gap might concern which risks a policy addresses. For a software platform, it might concern a workflow buyers do not yet know is possible. The creative challenge is to make the distinction concrete without overpromising.
Before approving the campaign, ask the target audience to explain the offer in their own words. Their misunderstandings may reveal a more useful brief than an internal debate about whether the brand feels modern enough.
Choose the product truth worth amplifying
Airbnb’s host-centred framing connected the campaign to a feature of its marketplace. Another business needs its own credible source of difference, rather than copying the emotional surface of the work.
Look for something the customer can experience and the organisation can sustain. A distinctive service process, a useful selection advantage or a particular way of solving a problem can provide material.

Avoid choosing a claim merely because it sounds ownable. If competitors deliver the same benefit or the business cannot consistently fulfil it, the campaign may create recognition around a weak promise.
The product and service teams should recognise the same truth in the creative. Otherwise the campaign risks teaching customers to expect an experience the company does not provide.
Give the channels complementary responsibilities
Brand activity may explain and establish associations. Performance activity may help people act when they are ready. PR may introduce independent reporting, public discussion or expert context.
These are possible roles, not rigid channel laws. A search advert can educate; a brand film can prompt an immediate purchase. What matters is that the plan names the intended contribution and avoids judging every activity by the same short-term metric.
Write the relationship as a customer journey rather than an organisational hierarchy. What becomes clearer, what question remains and where can the customer take the next step?
Make sure the destination supports the campaign’s promise. A distinctive story followed by an opaque booking or enquiry process can waste the attention the campaign earned.
Evaluate the explanation as well as the response
If the campaign’s job is to improve understanding, measure relevant understanding among the intended audience where feasible. Ask whether people can identify the difference and whether it matters to their choice.
Track commercial indicators separately and use an appropriate comparison before claiming incrementality. Changes in demand can reflect many factors, including availability, pricing, seasonality and product changes.
For a marketplace, inspect both sides of the experience. Attracting demand without suitable supply, or attracting suppliers without useful demand, can create disappointment. The communication plan should reflect the system the customer enters.
Avoid treating management’s description of a successful strategy as a portable causal formula. The value of the case lies in the clarity of the role assigned to marketing.
Bring the decision back to your business
Ask what a suitable prospect must understand before the offer becomes attractive. Then assess whether the obstacle is lack of exposure, a misunderstood proposition, weak proof or a poor experience after interest appears.
Fund the work that addresses the diagnosed obstacle and define how you will learn whether it helped. The answer may include brand investment, performance work, service repair or a combination.
Airbnb’s example makes the brand-versus-performance argument more practical. The CMO can stop defending a category of spending in the abstract and start explaining the specific customer understanding the business needs to create.
Key takeaways
- Airbnb documented an educational role for its host-centred 2021 campaign.
- A product truth worth amplifying must be experienced and sustained by the business.
- Choose channel roles around customer understanding rather than copying another company’s budget mix.
Put it into practice
Ask five suitable prospects to explain your offer, identify one recurring misunderstanding and write a campaign objective that addresses it directly.
