Make the first month a foundation for useful work

Start the proposal with the audience problem, executive contribution and intended business purpose. Use the first month to confirm the message platform, collect evidence, interview the executive and establish voice, permissions and approval responsibilities. Audit existing assets before promising unnecessary new material. Select one strong flagship idea and define what must be verified before it can travel externally. Set a realistic calendar using the executive’s available attention and agency capacity. The client should see tangible foundation outputs and their purpose, rather than regard discovery as an unexplained delay before a stream of posts or speculative media promises.

Sequence creation and opportunities around readiness

In the second month, develop the flagship argument and pursue a small set of relevant opportunities with suitable briefs. Separate agency-controlled deliverables, such as a completed pitch or rehearsal, from external decisions, such as an editor’s acceptance or an organizer’s invitation. Use approved adaptations to support a coherent public contribution while the outreach progresses. In the third month, deepen the ideas that attract relevant questions, prepare accepted appearances and review the evidence of recognition and opportunity. The sequence should be flexible enough to respond to useful developments without abandoning the audience purpose whenever an unrelated trend or prestigious but unsuitable invitation appears.

Write a commercial scope the team can deliver

Specify outputs, research depth, interview time, revision rounds, approval responsibilities, outreach effort, reporting and exclusions. Clarify who supplies evidence and permissions, what happens when a deadline is missed, and how additional work is agreed. Separate agency fees from optional travel, production or commercial placement costs. Explain the difference between independent editorial opportunities and paid arrangements. A proposal can sell rigorous preparation and useful execution without guaranteeing fame or named-media acceptance. Define a review point and renewal basis around the quality of delivery, relevant evidence and the next opportunity, rather than implying the executive’s reputation is a commodity the agency controls.

Place supporting products in a clearly defined role

Only recommend a product when it serves an identified campaign need. The Guest Post Marketplace lets the customer hand-pick from thousands of publications by audience fit, relevance and budget, retaining control of their campaign. NewsPass supports SEO, PR and GEO goals such as search visibility, media presence, brand credibility and discoverability in AI answers. Neither replaces a distinctive argument or independent editorial judgment. Accelerated Monthly PR & SEO is a separate Sitetrail-managed programme covering strategy, coordination, execution and reporting. Keep those choices explicit, describe any commercial route accurately, and preserve useful direct outreach and the executive’s own professional relationships within the wider plan.

Scope

The proposal sells a credible programme of work and learning, with external outcomes treated honestly.

See it in practice

Maya’s proposal starts with helping operations directors understand handover ownership before buying more reporting tools. Month one delivers an interview, evidence record, message platform and approved article brief. Month two develops the article, three distinct adaptations and a focused podcast and event outreach list, with preparation for any accepted invitation. Month three adds a practical worksheet, follows up qualified opportunities and reviews audience recognition and documented commercial conversations. The scope reserves Maya’s interview and review time, names an operations fact reviewer and limits revisions to an agreed process. An optional Marketplace budget is presented separately, with publication selection controlled by the client and the commercial relationship made clear. Renewal will consider delivery quality, relevant responses and the next evidence needs, without a promise of a famous stage, guaranteed coverage or a specific sales result.

Compare the alternative

Another proposal sells a large monthly content count, guaranteed authority and unspecified top-tier appearances for one fee. It omits executive time, research responsibilities, permissions and the distinction between paid and independent opportunities. When approvals delay the work, both parties believe the other has failed. The proposal created the conflict by hiding the dependencies behind a broad promise. A clearer scope would have made the actual work and controllable commitments visible before the client signed.

Avoid this misconception

A 90-day programme is a planning and learning period, not a universal deadline for becoming an authority. Some executives have substantial evidence and existing relationships; others need foundational work. The proposal should explain the starting position and dependencies. Selling a disciplined process with visible decisions can be commercially persuasive without pretending the agency controls every audience response or external selection process.

Know the boundary

Use fictional or approved material in the course capstone, and verify live product terms before preparing a real client budget. Do not promise independent acceptance, rankings, AI citations or sales. Obtain the relevant client authorization before purchases or external commitments, and describe sponsored or commercial opportunities accurately rather than presenting them as earned endorsement.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Complete Maya’s 90-day authority proposal as your course capstone.

Before you start

Use a document or spreadsheet and the fictional executive case provided. No purchase, confidential client data or contact with real journalists or event organizers is required.

Your steps

  • Sequence foundation, creation, outreach and review across three months.
  • State deliverables, dependencies, executive time and additional-work rules.
  • Separate optional product costs and commercial routes from independent outreach.

What better looks like

Before: Generic executive content with unclear evidence, audience and ownership.

After: A distinctive, supported idea with a clear audience purpose and an approved next action.

Your working notes

Verify your work

  • The proposal contains no guaranteed external acceptance or sales.
  • Product choices preserve the customer-control and managed-service distinctions.
  • Renewal depends on relevant evidence and a clear next plan.

Follow up

Ask a colleague to challenge the argument, evidence and voice. Record the revision, responsible owner and review date before using the work in a client programme.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

Maya wants a 90-day proposal with a credible public profile, but her evidence needs work and external editors control acceptance. She also wants an optional publication budget with direct choice. Which proposal best combines a commercially useful service with realistic delivery and product positioning?
