Module 03 / Lesson 11 · Read, apply, check
Measure relevant recognition and opportunities without confusing delivery, attention and commercial contribution.
Return to the audience, decision and business purpose established at discovery. Choose measures that can show whether useful expertise is reaching the right people and contributing to relevant opportunities. Record the baseline, period and method so that later comparisons have meaning. If the executive wants recognition among operations directors, broad follower growth alone cannot answer the question. Combine reliable activity records with evidence of audience fit and substantive response. Decide in advance what would cause the agency to continue, change or stop an approach. Measurement should help the client make a better next decision, not simply decorate a retrospective report.
Maintain distinct categories for completed work, audience response and qualified opportunities. An approved article is delivery; a relevant reader naming its central idea is evidence of recognition; an organizer requesting a suitable speaking discussion is an opportunity. Record the stage accurately, distinguishing an invitation to apply from confirmed acceptance and an exploratory call from a contracted engagement. Define qualification criteria such as audience fit, topic relevance, decision-maker involvement and a clear next step. These categories let the agency demonstrate useful progress without pretending every asset is an outcome or every friendly message is a lead that the sales team should pursue.
Ask the commercial team how relevant prospects encountered the executive’s work and whether it helped a specific conversation. Capture the person’s account, timing and supporting records where available, while respecting the organization’s information-handling practices. A tracked link can show a visit, but it does not establish everything that influenced a buying decision. A salesperson’s recollection is useful evidence with limitations, not a perfect attribution model. Describe the programme’s documented contribution alongside other influences, such as referrals, existing relationships and product fit. Avoid assigning the entire value of a deal to one post merely because it appeared before the enquiry.
Use a short review to connect the evidence to practical choices. Which ideas attracted relevant questions? Which formats required disproportionate effort? Did the executive’s message become clearer, and did the intended audience recognize it? Include qualitative examples with context rather than selecting only flattering comments. Explain weak or mixed results and propose a specific adjustment: a narrower topic, stronger example, different room or reduced cadence. Keep measurement effort proportionate to the service. A concise record that changes the next month’s plan is more valuable than a large dashboard whose categories conceal uncertainty and whose numbers never affect editorial priorities.

After eight weeks, Maya’s programme has delivered one article, a podcast appearance, a panel proposal and several useful posts. The report separates those outputs from three substantive operations-leader discussions. One organizer has invited her to discuss a future session, but no speaking place is confirmed. A prospect tells the sales team that the handover article helped them frame an existing coordination problem; the record also shows a prior referral and a product demonstration. The agency describes the article as a documented contribution to that conversation, not the sole cause of the opportunity. Generic posts generated more reactions but fewer relevant questions. The next cycle therefore prioritizes a practical handover example and a specialist event, with a clear review of audience fit and the unresolved speaking opportunity.
Another agency labels all reactions as leads, counts an application invitation as a confirmed keynote and credits the full value of every subsequent deal to the executive’s posts. The impressive report prevents useful comparison because its categories do not match actual stages or evidence. When the client asks which conversations progressed and why, the agency cannot answer. Inflated measurement has made renewal harder by obscuring the real contributions that could have supported a credible discussion.
Qualitative evidence is not automatically weak, and a precise-looking number is not automatically strong. A documented explanation from a relevant prospect can be more useful than an unexplained impression total. Both need context, definitions and limits. The question is whether the evidence supports the decision being made, rather than whether the report contains the largest number or the most elaborate attribution language.
Use appropriate access and handling for prospect information, and avoid exposing private correspondence in public case studies without permission. Keep pending opportunities separate from confirmed outcomes. Do not guarantee that executive visibility will produce sales, independent coverage, rankings or AI citations, and label estimates or incomplete observations clearly in the client report.

Before you move on
A prospect says Maya’s article helped explain a problem, but they also came through a referral and attended a product demo. An organizer has requested a discussion without confirming a slot. How should the agency report these developments in the authority programme review?
