Gong Labs connects research topics with the sales conversations its product observes; the opportunity for other companies is original evidence with a clearly explained field of view.
A software company can publish another article telling salespeople to listen carefully. It can also investigate what happens in actual sales conversations and publish a finding that readers can question, discuss and test.
Gong chose the second route as a recurring content programme through Gong Labs. The strategic connection is straightforward: a product concerned with revenue conversations can make those conversations the subject of useful analysis.
The case offers more than a content-format idea. It shows why a company’s access to evidence can become editorial material, and why the limits of that access need to stay visible.
The documented publishing mechanism
Gong’s research manifesto describes selecting recorded calls, processing and transcribing them, linking them to CRM records and examining patterns in relation to sales outcomes.
The Gong Labs page presents a continuing programme of research into sales interactions. These are the company’s descriptions of its method and publishing operation. They do not independently establish how much revenue the content programme generated.
The important mechanism is that the subject matter and the product’s capabilities are related. Readers can encounter a useful question about selling while also understanding the kind of information the product makes available.
That is different from inserting a sales pitch into an otherwise unrelated trend article. The evidence itself provides a reason for the company to participate in the conversation.
Original access is not universal representation
A company’s dataset reflects who uses its services and what those services can observe. That can be valuable without representing every business, industry or buying situation.
For a sales-interaction dataset, questions about customer mix, recorded channels, missing interactions and outcome definitions matter. A large count of calls does not automatically remove selection effects.
The CMO should therefore resist a headline that expands beyond the sampled world. A pattern among recorded users should not become a universal law of buyer behaviour without supporting evidence.
This is a general limitation of proprietary research, not a claim that a particular Gong finding is wrong. Understanding the field of view is how readers decide whether a finding is relevant to their own circumstances.
Association is a starting point for judgement
Suppose, in a hypothetical analysis, successful sales conversations contain more discussion of implementation. Several explanations are possible. That discussion may help the sale, or serious buyers may be more likely to raise implementation because they already intend to proceed.

Deal size, sales stage or product complexity could also affect both the conversation and the outcome. A content team should not turn the association into a guaranteed instruction to add a particular phrase.
The useful article explains the pattern, plausible mechanisms and what a manager could inspect in their own process. A stronger causal claim would require an appropriate design and evidence.
That treatment can still be commercially interesting. Readers do not need an exaggerated certainty to find a well-framed observation useful.
Find your company’s legitimate evidence advantage
A maintenance provider may observe recurring equipment problems. A payments company may see transaction patterns. A professional-services firm may understand implementation obstacles across projects.
Start with questions customers genuinely ask, then examine whether the organisation has suitable evidence. Do not begin with a dramatic headline and search the data until something appears to support it.
Check permissions, confidentiality and the risk of identifying customers before any analysis is published. Having operational access to data does not automatically authorise public use.
Some useful research can come from aggregated non-sensitive patterns, structured interviews or a documented review of public information. The advantage is a credible perspective, not necessarily a massive private dataset.
Publish a method readers can understand
State the population, period, inclusion criteria, unit of analysis and outcome definition. Explain important exclusions and limitations in language the intended reader can follow.
The ONS’s bulletin guidance provides a useful publishing discipline by including sources, methods and quality information. A commercial report need not imitate an official bulletin, but it should help readers interpret the evidence rather than merely admire the chart.
Give a knowledgeable reviewer a route to the underlying method. If a claim cannot survive that conversation, reducing the headline’s certainty is usually more useful than adding visual polish.
Make the finding useful beyond launch day
Build supporting material for sales and customer teams: an explanation of the finding, situations where it applies and questions it raises. Do not convert a qualified research result into an unqualified sales promise.
If repeating the study, preserve definitions or explain changes. A trend series loses meaning when the sample or measurement changes silently between releases. Keep the earlier methodology available for comparison.
Gong’s case suggests a durable editorial opportunity: use the company’s legitimate view of a problem to help the market think better about it. The commercial narrative becomes stronger when the research has enough integrity to be useful even to a reader who never buys the product.
Key takeaways
- A recurring research programme can connect product capabilities with questions the market cares about.
- A large proprietary dataset still has a limited field of view.
- Publish methods and qualify associations so useful evidence does not become an unsupported sales rule.
Put it into practice
List three customer questions your organisation can investigate using legitimately available evidence; for each, define the population and the strongest claim the data could support.
