Module 02 / Lesson 12 · Read, apply, check
Measure search journeys that may end without a click while keeping observed and unobserved outcomes distinct.
A zero-click search is commonly used to describe a search interaction without a subsequent click to an external website. Definitions vary across studies: some count clicks within the search provider’s ecosystem differently. State the definition before comparing percentages. A query answered on the results page and a user abandoning a poor result can both produce no external visit for very different reasons.
Pew studied browsing by nine hundred US adults in March 2025. In that sample, traditional-result clicks occurred on eight percent of visits with an AI summary, compared with fifteen percent without one; AI-summary source clicks were rare. These findings describe observed behavior in that setting, not a prediction that every business will lose the same share of traffic.
Provide accurate facts, recognizable brand information and substantive explanations that serve customers. Some questions can be satisfied immediately; others require comparison, tools, detailed evidence or a transaction on your site. Do not intentionally withhold basic facts to force clicks. Make the deeper visit worthwhile by solving the next meaningful part of the customer’s task.
Monitor search visibility, relevant visits, qualified actions and business outcomes together. Where available, use platform-specific reporting and clearly scoped AI observations. Customer interviews can reveal discovery routes that click logs miss, but memories are imperfect. Label what you can observe, what is inferred and what remains unknown so a traffic decline is neither ignored nor automatically treated as commercial failure.
Result → website → useful action. Visits and defined actions may be measurable.
Result → question resolved → no website visit. Recognition or later influence may be unobserved.
Was the information accurate and useful for the task?
Do not turn every impression into a sale or every absent click into proof of no value.
Hypothetical example: a specialist retailer sees fewer visits to a short page answering a basic sizing question. Its product comparison pages and qualified orders remain stable. The analyst checks query and page groups rather than assuming the whole search program is failing. The team updates the sizing answer for accuracy, strengthens useful comparison information and asks a small sample of customers how they found the brand. It records those responses as qualitative evidence. If orders later decline, that becomes a separate problem requiring investigation. The current evidence supports a change in the shape of the journey, but it does not prove that an AI answer caused every lost click or that exposure without a visit has a known financial value.
A publisher dependent on advertising revenue may face a more direct business impact from fewer visits than a local service business receiving calls from search. Both need accurate measurement, but their decisions differ. The publisher may develop deeper original reporting or subscription value; the service business may improve call handling. Calling zero-click search either universally good or universally bad ignores the organization’s revenue model.
Misconception: if nobody visits, SEO has no value. Correction: some discovery and actions happen elsewhere. The opposite claim is also wrong: invisible exposure cannot simply be counted as revenue. Evaluate the specific journey and available evidence.
Visibility metrics can be incomplete and reporting definitions change. Do not combine figures from incompatible studies or imply that an impression proves the brand was read, remembered or chosen.

Map one customer question through a no-click path and a website-visit path. List the useful action possible on each path, the measure available and the part of the journey you cannot observe reliably.
Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.
A customer checks opening hours in a local result and calls without visiting the website.
Before: “No website visit means no marketing value.”
After: A useful contact journey exists, with explicit measurement limits.

Before you move on
A retailer notices fewer visits to basic informational answers while qualified product enquiries stay stable. Its manager points to a zero-click study and proposes abandoning SEO entirely. The available data does not identify the cause of each lost visit. What should the analyst recommend?
