Module 02 / Lesson 13 · Read, apply, check
Coordinate PR and SEO around shared audience questions, evidence and business outcomes without collapsing their responsibilities.
PR and SEO can begin from the same customer questions and business objectives. Search research reveals recurring needs; PR expertise helps identify news value, credible spokespeople and relevant publications. A shared problem gives both teams a useful starting point. It does not mean every searchable topic is newsworthy or every publicity opportunity deserves a new website page.
Create accurate facts, accessible methodology, expert explanations and useful on-site resources. These materials help an editor assess a story and help a visitor understand the subject after discovery. Agree ownership of the evidence and its update process. A campaign becomes fragile when public claims differ from what the company’s own site can substantiate.
The SEO team checks discoverability, page purpose, technical implementation and search measurement. The PR team manages story development, media relationships, spokesperson preparation and editorial context. Both review factual consistency and audience relevance. Editors retain their publication decisions; technical specialists do not guarantee coverage, and PR specialists do not promise rankings from a particular mention.
Record delivery, coverage, links, unlinked mentions, search observations and qualified outcomes in separate fields. Look for patterns and use customer feedback to enrich the evidence. A shared dashboard should make uncertainty clearer, not disguise it. When several channels contribute to a purchase, acknowledge that a single placement or page may not receive reliable causal credit.
Restaurant owners need to compare equipment maintenance.
Technicians document a useful method, examples and limits.
The website hosts a clear guide with discoverable internal paths.
Relevant editors assess the findings and select natural references.
Separate coverage, mentions, visits and qualified inquiries; record other influences.
Hypothetical example: a logistics software company discovers that small distributors struggle to understand delivery exceptions. Its product expert and analyst prepare a transparent study using a clearly defined sample, with limitations and an accessible methodology page. The SEO team builds a useful explanatory resource around the audience’s questions and checks indexing. The PR team offers the findings and a qualified spokesperson to relevant trade editors. Coverage may include a link, an unlinked mention or no coverage at all. The team records those outcomes separately, watches qualified enquiries and asks prospects about their discovery path. If enquiries increase, the report describes the coordinated campaign and alternative explanations rather than assigning the entire increase to one article.
Contrast a campaign where SEO supplies a list of exact anchors, PR distributes a generic announcement and the website lacks any supporting evidence. The teams may both complete their tasks, yet the story offers little audience value and the destination cannot substantiate its claims. Coordination should happen before production, when the question, evidence and intended next step can still be improved.
Misconception: PR has become link building under another name. Correction: media relationships and credible public communication have broader purposes. Links may help navigation and discovery, but recognition, reputation and accurate coverage are distinct outcomes requiring their own evaluation.
Some important technical fixes have no media angle, and some reputation issues require communication regardless of search demand. Coordinate where the objectives genuinely overlap; do not force every activity into the same campaign or metric.

Write a joint campaign brief with one audience question, evidence owner, useful website destination, publication rationale, spokesperson and measurement plan. Include an attribution statement explaining what the report will not be able to prove.
Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.
A logistics business can explain a documented cause of delivery failures and has a useful customer checklist.
Before: PR counts placements while SEO demands isolated links.
After: One evidence-led campaign connects useful coverage to a credible website resource.

Before you move on
A software company wants a joint PR and SEO campaign. It has credible research but no accessible explanation on its site, and the teams currently report only article counts and backlinks. Which plan best connects the work to informed business decisions while respecting editorial independence?
