Find the objection behind the words

“Too expensive” may mean unaffordable, poorly understood, risky or lower priority than another project. Ask a calm follow-up before changing the price. “Which part of the proposed commitment feels out of proportion to the value?” can reveal the concern. Listen for the buyer’s comparison and decision constraints. Do not assume every hesitation is a negotiating tactic. An objection can contain useful evidence that the scope, timing or fit needs to change.

Trade scope deliberately

If budget is the issue, reduce or phase the work in a way that preserves a useful outcome. A research sprint may precede a larger outreach program. Explain which inputs, outputs and responsibilities change with the fee. Avoid quietly removing essential editorial review or reporting while promising the same result. A discount without a corresponding commercial reason can teach the buyer that the original price was arbitrary and leave delivery economics weaker from the first month.

Rebuild trust with clarity and proof

A buyer disappointed by previous PR needs to understand the work, dependencies and measurement. Show a relevant example with context, explain the reporting cadence and name the client contributions required. Distinguish independent editorial coverage from paid or sponsored routes. If a placement is paid, describe it honestly. A credible agency does not need to disguise the nature of an opportunity to make it useful; it needs to explain audience fit, purpose and realistic value.

Handle guarantees and timing directly

You can commit to defined work, service standards and transparent reporting. You cannot control an independent editor’s decision merely by promising harder. If the buyer needs a paid media route, evaluate that route explicitly and describe its terms accurately. For timing objections, identify the real milestone and the latest sensible start date. If the schedule is impossible, offer a narrower feasible scope or decline rather than relying on pressure to win an engagement the team cannot deliver well.

Diagnose before responding

Price

Clarify affordability, value comparison and scope.

Trust

Show the work, evidence and reporting; clarify paid versus earned.

Timing

Identify the milestone and a feasible delivery sequence.

Guarantee

Commit to controllable work and state external dependencies.

The right response addresses the actual uncertainty rather than escalating the promise.

See it in practice

A fictional prospect says the proposed fee is high and asks for a guarantee of coverage in a named publication. The strategist asks whether the concern is budget, confidence in execution or a specific board expectation. The buyer explains that a previous agency blurred paid content and independent coverage. The strategist shows a scope with separate research, earned outreach and optional paid routes, explaining each clearly. They agree to begin with an evidence sprint and a media-readiness assessment before choosing the next phase. The fee is lower because the commitment is smaller, not because the same work has been discounted arbitrarily. The buyer gains a clearer decision, and the agency preserves a promise it can support with competent execution and reporting.

Compare the alternative

Another salesperson responds to resistance by immediately cutting the price and promising a famous media logo. The proposal does not explain whether the route is editorial or paid. Once work starts, the team discovers that the buyer expects independent coverage and unlimited revisions within an unrealistic deadline. The original objection was never resolved; it was buried beneath a cheaper price and a stronger promise, creating a predictable conflict during delivery and renewal.

Avoid this misconception

An objection is not always something to overcome. It may reveal a genuine mismatch. A buyer demanding misleading presentation or an impossible guarantee may be unsuitable for the agency. A clear explanation and a respectful decline can be a better commercial decision than a fragile sale.

Know the boundary

Paid opportunities can still serve a legitimate campaign purpose, but their nature and terms must be clear. Do not imply that a paid contribution or membership route is independent newsroom endorsement. The client should be able to explain what they bought without discovering a different story later.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Write responses to four objections for a launch evidence and outreach proposal.

Before you start

A document or spreadsheet and the public information described below. You can use the illustrative scenario without a website, paid account or live prospect.

Your steps

  • Draft one diagnostic question for each objection.
  • Define a smaller scope that still produces a useful result.
  • Write a clear paid-versus-earned explanation.
  • State one commitment you can make and one dependency you cannot control.

What better looks like

Before: A price reduction or stronger promise used to suppress every objection.

After: A response that diagnoses the concern and clarifies proof, scope, timing and controllable commitments.

Your working notes

Verify your work

  • Price changes have a scope or commercial rationale.
  • The media route is described accurately.
  • No response invents control over an independent editorial decision.

Follow up

Review this worksheet after your next real conversation or campaign review. Record what changed, the evidence for that change and your next dated action.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A prospect says a previous agency sold paid content as independent coverage and now demands a guaranteed prestigious placement before paying. You have a sound research and outreach process but cannot control an editor. Which response best addresses the trust issue and preserves a viable offer?
