Choose the format for the decision

Sponsored InMail is a familiar term, while current LinkedIn materials describe Message Ads and Conversation Ads within Sponsored Messaging. Message Ads use a single main call to action; Conversation Ads can offer multiple response paths. Choose a format because it fits the buyer’s decision, not because a branching interface looks sophisticated. A simple diagnostic invitation may need one path. A buyer choosing between launch preparation and ongoing credibility work may benefit from a small, useful branch.

Make the sender and opening credible

Use a sender whose role supports the offer and complete any required sender setup in Campaign Manager. The opening should explain relevance quickly: who the offer is for, what problem it addresses and what the buyer receives. Keep the tone natural, but do not pretend a paid campaign is an existing personal conversation. A specific observation about the target situation is more persuasive than invented familiarity or a long introduction to the agency.

Write the destination before the message

Define what happens when the buyer clicks. A landing page or Lead Gen Form must match the promised output and explain the next step. For a conversation flow, write each branch on paper first: question, choice, response and destination. Avoid dead ends and branches that all disguise the same hard sell. Give a genuine information route when useful. Preview the experience and submit a test lead so the team knows the handoff works before paying for traffic.

Evaluate downstream quality

Delivery, opens and clicks are intermediate signals. Record which message or branch produced the lead and whether the prospect became a qualified meeting. A broad offer can attract curiosity without purchase intent. Compare one clear hypothesis at a time and let sufficient data accumulate within a predefined budget. If Sponsored Messaging is unavailable for your audience or account, carry the same offer into an eligible feed format rather than designing a plan around an inaccessible control.

A useful message path

Offer

A bounded credibility review for a specific buying situation.

Choice

One action, or a small number of meaningful branches.

Destination

The form or page repeats the exact promise.

Handoff

A named owner receives context and responds with the next step.

Measure the complete path from paid message to qualified conversation.

See it in practice

A fictional agency creates a message for marketing leaders preparing a market entry. The sender is the agency strategist who will lead the diagnostic. The message offers a one-page credibility gap review and states that it uses three public assets. The call to action opens a form with the same promise and one relevant qualifying question about launch timing. A second, separate test uses a conversation flow with two choices: “launch planned” and “already in market.” Each route explains an appropriate diagnostic and reaches a matching form. The agency records the route in its lead review. It discovers that the post-launch branch produces fewer leads but more qualified discussions, giving the team a reason to refine that offer rather than optimizing opens alone.

Compare the alternative

Another campaign opens with “following up on our conversation” even though the recipients have never spoken to the sender. Every branch eventually requests a sales call, and the destination page changes the promise from a diagnostic to a long retainer. Open rates look encouraging, but prospects arrive confused or distrustful. The format has created activity while the mismatch between message, branch and destination has weakened the commercial conversation the agency actually wanted to start.

Avoid this misconception

Sponsored Messaging is not a substitute for organic relationship management. It is a paid format with a defined audience and measurable cost. Personal InMail credits, ordinary messages and Sponsored Messaging are different routes; plan and measure them separately so campaign economics remain understandable.

Know the boundary

Format availability and delivery conditions vary. Confirm the current options, geography and sender requirements in your advertising account before producing final assets. No message format guarantees delivery to every selected person, a reply or a meeting, regardless of how precisely you define the audience.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Draft a Message Ad and a two-branch Conversation Ad for the same diagnostic offer.

Before you start

A document or spreadsheet and the public information described below. You can use the illustrative scenario without a website, paid account or live prospect.

Your steps

  • Write the offer and sender rationale.
  • Create a short opening and primary action.
  • Map two branches with matching destinations.
  • Define a test-lead handoff and qualification question.

What better looks like

Before: A paid message with unclear choices or a destination that changes the offer.

After: A concise message path with meaningful branches, matching destinations and a tested handoff.

Your working notes

Notes stay in this browser. Download a copy to keep them.

Verify your work

  • No branch implies a prior relationship that does not exist.
  • Each destination fulfills the message promise.
  • Campaign and branch context reaches the sales owner.

Follow up

Review this worksheet after your next real conversation or campaign review. Record what changed, the evidence for that change and your next dated action.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

You are planning a paid LinkedIn message campaign for an agency diagnostic. Some buyers are preparing a launch and others have already launched. You want useful choice without confusing the handoff. Which design best uses Sponsored Messaging for this situation?
