Start outside the advertising interface

Write the audience brief before selecting controls. Define the company type, relevant geography, likely buying role and situation that makes the offer useful. Separate attributes the platform can target from signals your team must research. “Expanding into Germany this quarter” may require an account list or a message framed around that situation; it is not automatically a selectable targeting attribute. The brief prevents a convenient interface option from silently replacing your actual customer strategy.

Map roles to responsibility

Consider job function, seniority, title variants and company characteristics available in your account. A founder audience and a marketing director audience may need different creative even when they work at similar companies. Avoid combining every restriction at once. Inspect the estimated audience and ask whether the people left are plausible buyers. If the audience is too small to deliver, widen one justified dimension rather than abandoning the business logic and targeting everyone interested in marketing.

Separate experiments cleanly

Build a small number of distinct audience hypotheses. For example, compare marketing leaders at relevant software firms with founders at smaller firms, using a consistent offer. Record the exclusions and any audience expansion settings shown in Campaign Manager. Exclude irrelevant existing relationships where appropriate and technically supported. Do not create many tiny overlapping tests that cannot collect enough useful evidence. A clean comparison makes it easier to identify whether the role, offer or creative is driving qualified demand.

Inspect the leads behind the averages

Audience estimates and early clicks do not establish quality. Review actual company fit, role and stated need in the leads you receive. If a campaign attracts vendors or job seekers, revise the framing and qualification process before increasing spend. Keep a change log with dates and reasons. An audience that delivers fewer leads but more qualified meetings may be commercially stronger than one that generates cheap form submissions from people unable to buy.

Cheap leads can make expensive meetings

Fictional paid-audience comparison. Spend and conversion figures are teaching assumptions.

Spend per audience$2,400
Founder qualified meetings4
Marketing-lead qualified meetings8
Founder audience · cost per qualified meeting600 USD
Marketing leaders · cost per qualified meeting300 USD
AudienceLeadsCost / leadQualified meetingsCost / qualified meeting
Founders40$604$600
Marketing leaders24$1008$300

The founder audience wins on lead cost. The marketing-leader audience wins on qualified meeting cost. Neither result proves that the meetings will become profitable clients.

The agency decision: Compare spend ÷ qualified meetings, then inspect buying readiness and delivery inputs before increasing spend.

Audience translation

Business brief

Software firms with a credible launch or expansion need.

Buying role

Founder or marketing owner, with different responsibilities.

Platform setup

Use available attributes, lists and exclusions deliberately.

Quality review

Inspect fit and qualified meetings before expanding spend.

Keep the business definition visible while configuring the platform.

See it in practice

An illustrative agency sells launch evidence sprints to B2B software firms. It defines two buyer groups: marketing leaders at established companies and founders at smaller businesses. The team creates separate campaign hypotheses and uses the same diagnostic offer so the first comparison is understandable. It checks the available targeting controls, estimates and exclusions in its own account instead of assuming an exact configuration from a tutorial. After the first review, founder leads respond quickly but often lack an available expert; marketing leaders respond more slowly but have stronger delivery inputs. The agency keeps both groups visible and compares qualified meeting cost, not just lead cost. It changes the founder message to make the required client contribution clearer before deciding whether to stop that test.

Compare the alternative

Another agency targets every senior professional with an interest in entrepreneurship, then advertises guaranteed publicity. Cheap enquiries arrive from job seekers, freelancers and businesses with no suitable budget. The team concludes that LinkedIn leads are poor, although its audience and promise were never aligned with a specific agency offer. Broad delivery produced a large denominator that concealed the more important question: how many prospects actually matched the business problem the agency could solve?

Avoid this misconception

The narrowest audience is not automatically the best audience. Targeting must balance relevance with enough eligible people to test. If the offer is highly specific, a well-researched account approach may be more suitable than forcing a very small paid campaign to behave like a broad demand engine.

Know the boundary

Targeting controls, minimum audience requirements and available formats can vary by geography, account and campaign setup. Check the current interface before committing a budget. This lesson teaches the audience decision process rather than promising a fixed set of controls or a universal audience size.

Do this today · 30 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Draft two audience hypotheses for one agency offer without launching a paid campaign.

Before you start

A document or spreadsheet and the public information described below. You can use the illustrative scenario without a website, paid account or live prospect.

Your steps

  • Write the business segment and trigger.
  • Map each criterion to a platform attribute or research requirement.
  • Define two distinct role groups and exclusions.
  • Set a quality review rule and a spending limit for a future test.

What better looks like

Before: An audience assembled from convenient interface options without a buyer brief.

After: Two interpretable audience hypotheses connected to a business segment and quality review rule.

Your working notes

Notes stay in this browser. Download a copy to keep them.

Verify your work

  • The audience brief exists independently of the interface.
  • The two tests have a meaningful difference.
  • Lead quality and stopping criteria are defined before spending.

Follow up

Review this worksheet after your next real conversation or campaign review. Record what changed, the evidence for that change and your next dated action.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

Your PR offer serves software companies launching in a new region. Campaign Manager offers broad professional attributes, but your business trigger is more specific than the available controls. Which approach best preserves relevance while creating a test you can interpret?
