Prioritize page-experience improvements using user-visible problems and field evidence rather than a single score.
Largest Contentful Paint concerns the loading of the main visible content, Interaction to Next Paint concerns responsiveness and Cumulative Layout Shift concerns unexpected visual movement. Use the names to ask what a visitor experiences. A slow hero image, an unresponsive button and a moving enquiry form are different problems with different technical causes.
Field measurements reflect experiences from real users under the reporting system’s conditions. A lab test is a controlled diagnostic run that helps investigate causes. A good lab result does not prove every visitor has a good experience, and a single slow run does not establish the typical experience. Compare appropriate devices, page groups and observation periods.
Start with pages and interactions that matter to customers. Check readable content, usable controls, intrusive overlays and the steps required to complete an action. A fast page can still be confusing or inaccurate. Combine performance evidence with a walkthrough of the actual task instead of optimizing a score while leaving the enquiry form unusable.
Ask developers to identify the cause, make a bounded change and compare the result under similar conditions. Image sizing, script work and reserved space can address different symptoms. Preserve necessary functionality and accessibility. Good Core Web Vitals support experience, but they do not guarantee a top ranking or compensate for irrelevant content.
Investigate LCP and the resources delaying useful content.
Investigate INP and work that delays interaction response.
Investigate CLS and unstable layout that moves controls.
Compare field evidence and diagnostic tests; neither a score nor speed alone guarantees useful content.
Hypothetical example: a service site’s mobile enquiry button responds slowly and a late-loading promotion pushes the form down the screen. The team first records the actual interaction and reviews field evidence for the affected page group. A developer finds that a large script blocks interaction and that the promotion has no reserved space. The change reduces unnecessary script work and reserves the promotion’s dimensions. The team repeats comparable diagnostics and monitors subsequent field data, while checking that the form still submits correctly. It reports the improved experience and observed enquiry behavior separately. A higher test score is supporting evidence, not proof that the change caused every additional enquiry or secured a ranking improvement.
A second site removes useful product images and essential form validation to achieve a higher laboratory score. It becomes lighter but harder to evaluate and less reliable to use. That tradeoff may damage the business task the page exists to support. Performance work should preserve relevant information and functioning controls, with deliberate choices about which expensive elements actually contribute value.
Misconception: a perfect performance score means the page is fully optimized for search. Correction: a score describes selected measurements under particular conditions. Relevance, useful content, access, trust and the complete customer task still need evaluation.
Field data may be unavailable for low-traffic pages or may aggregate similar pages. Use diagnostics and careful testing while acknowledging that limitation. Avoid presenting a small simulated improvement as a population-wide measured outcome.

Test an important page on a small screen. Record one loading, responsiveness or layout problem, describe its effect on the user and agree a verification method that includes the relevant action after the change.
Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.
A mobile booking button moves when a promotional image loads, causing an accidental tap.
Before: A high audit score is the only success criterion.
After: The booking control remains stable during a reproducible loading sequence.

Before you move on
A mobile page earns a good laboratory score, but customers report an enquiry button that freezes after they open a comparison panel. The team wants to declare performance complete. Which response best uses measurement while addressing the actual user experience?
