Build a local measurement sheet that distinguishes visibility, contact actions and qualified customers.
Choose the outcome the business can actually fulfill: booked appointments, suitable quote requests or completed visits. A map-position screenshot is a limited observation of a particular search context. It should not replace the question of whether the business receives relevant demand.
Record profile interactions, website visits, enquiries and qualified bookings as different measures. A call-button action is not automatically an answered call or a sale. Use consistent definitions and appropriate aggregate operational records to understand where demand becomes useful work.
Compare periods with similar opening hours, seasonality and service availability. Record promotions, closures and staffing changes alongside marketing changes. A decline in bookings during a holiday closure cannot be interpreted like a decline when service capacity and demand are stable.
Look for a specific failure: unanswered calls, wrong hours, unsuitable service areas or a confusing booking page. Assign a fix to the person who can resolve it and verify the journey. Local marketing often improves when operational accuracy improves, even without a visible rank movement.
Platform contact interactions; not necessarily unique customers.
Operationally recorded contacts; coverage may differ.
Enquiries meeting the business’s stated criteria.
Appointments booked, separate from completed services.
Hypothetical example: a clinic reports eighty contact actions but only twenty recorded enquiries in a month. The owner assumes the map listing is sending poor traffic. Reception checks the call process and finds that the published number routes evening callers to an unattended extension, even though evening appointments are advertised. The team corrects routing and tests it during the relevant hours. Its next report separates contact actions, answered enquiries and qualified bookings, and notes that these counts come from different systems. The immediate result is a working contact path. A later increase in bookings would still need interpretation alongside staffing, seasonal demand and changes in appointment capacity.
Another business receives more enquiries after extending opening hours and starting a local advertising campaign in the same week. Assigning all growth to a profile-description edit would ignore the larger operational and paid-media changes. The report should list the concurrent changes and compare relevant segments. The useful conclusion may be that the combined program increased observed demand, while the contribution of one small edit remains uncertain.
Misconception: a profile interaction is a customer. A tap, visit, enquiry, booking and completed service are distinct events. Combining them into one impressive number makes it harder to identify the real bottleneck.
Availability of profile metrics varies, and platform definitions can change. Use the fields currently available to the business, document their meaning and avoid collecting unnecessary personal information in a marketing worksheet.

Build a local measurement sheet that distinguishes visibility, contact actions and qualified customers.
Aggregate profile or website observations plus operational enquiry counts, or the sample funnel.
One month: 80 profile contact actions, 20 recorded enquiries, 12 qualified enquiries, 8 bookings. Evening phone routing fails during advertised appointment hours.
Before: “80 customers from Maps.”
After: “80 contact actions; 20 enquiries; 8 bookings, with different source definitions.”

A clinic sees eighty profile contact actions but only twenty recorded enquiries. Evening calls reach an unattended extension despite advertised evening appointments. Management asks whether the profile is generating eighty customers and whether a ranking change is needed. What should the analyst recommend?
