Module 16 / Lesson 82 · Read, apply, check
Prepare a useful story angle with inspectable evidence and clearly bounded claims.
Identify a question a publication’s audience cares about, then ask what your organization can contribute. A product announcement is not automatically relevant news for every outlet. Useful contributions may include original observations, a credible explanation or an expert perspective grounded in actual work.
For each claim, identify its source, method, date and limitation. Distinguish measured facts, illustrative examples and expert interpretation. If data comes from a narrow customer sample, say so. A striking headline should not expand a finding beyond the population or period actually observed.
Create a short methods note, a fact sheet, an appropriate visual and access to a knowledgeable spokesperson. Remove private customer details or obtain the necessary permissions through the business’s process. The editor should be able to inspect the contribution without relying on promotional adjectives.
Provide a relevant website resource where readers can verify detail or learn more. Explain why it is useful, but do not make forced keyword anchors or guaranteed links the condition for supplying evidence. Accurate facts and an appropriate commercial disclosure remain distinct from editorial choices.
Delayed appointments in forty branches during one quarter.
Document how reasons were collected and classified.
Help readers prepare the information a repair team needs.
Do not generalize the sample to every business or period.
Hypothetical example: a repair network analyzes anonymized reasons for delayed appointments across forty branches in one quarter. It finds that missing model information frequently requires a second customer call. The PR lead proposes a practical story about preparing for a repair appointment, with a methods note explaining the sample and classification process. The headline does not claim to describe every repair business in the country. A service manager can explain the findings, and a public checklist lets readers apply them. The evidence pack separates measured observations from illustrative examples and identifies the commercial source. An editor can evaluate the story without being required to repeat a sales phrase or promise coverage.
Another company commissions a tiny informal poll of its own staff and announces that it proves a national consumer trend. The headline is more dramatic than the evidence. Adding a chart or distributing the claim widely does not repair the sample problem. A useful alternative would label the findings as an internal exploratory observation, narrow the claim and seek a better data source before proposing a national conclusion.
Misconception: a newsworthy angle requires the strongest possible claim. A narrower, well-supported finding can be more useful and credible than a sweeping statement that fails basic scrutiny. Editorial interest does not remove the need for accurate scope.
Research involving customers or sensitive subjects may need specialist review and permissions. If the available evidence cannot support the proposed story, revise the angle or delay the pitch rather than filling gaps with invented results.

Prepare a useful story angle with inspectable evidence and clearly bounded claims.
One genuine expertise area and supporting material, or the fictional repair-network sample.
Forty branches reviewed one quarter of delayed appointments. Missing model information often required a second call. The sample does not represent all repair businesses.
Before: “Our small sample proves how every repair business operates.”
After: “A forty-branch review identifies a recurring appointment-preparation issue in one quarter.”

Ask an uninvolved colleague to challenge the claims and methods before pitching; update the evidence pack when new information changes the conclusion.
Before you move on
A repair network has anonymized observations from forty branches over one quarter and wants to pitch a national claim about every repair business. A public preparation checklist and a knowledgeable manager are available. What should the evidence pack do before outreach begins?
