Module 02 / Lesson 07 · Read, apply, check
Choose publication opportunities for audience and information value while keeping AI-citation hypotheses testable.
Start with the intended reader, subject and use of the content. Read recent relevant material and assess whether the publication helps the client reach the people who face the chosen decision. Review the quality of the actual section and article format, not only the domain name. Ask whether the publication can accommodate the evidence and context needed for the story. A broad outlet may be useful for one purpose while a specialist title is better for another. The selection record should explain that purpose in plain language, so a client can understand why a less famous but relevant opportunity belongs in the campaign.
Audience estimates, search visibility and third-party authority metrics can inform research, but none establishes that an AI system will cite a future article. A publication appearing in your sampled answers is a useful observation, not a permanent whitelist of preferred sources. Record which page appeared, for which question, in which product and on what date. Consider whether its information was relevant, distinctive or current rather than assuming the domain alone caused selection. Avoid selling a high-metric placement as an algorithmic shortcut. The client needs a defensible publication choice and a realistic hypothesis about discovery, not a promise derived from a score.
Independent outreach, expert contributions and commercial opportunities have different conditions. Verify the route, expected disclosure, editorial requirements, link terms where relevant and supplier responsibilities before committing. The Guest Post Marketplace lets customers hand-pick from thousands of publications by audience fit, relevance and budget, retaining control of their campaign. Use that choice to compare actual opportunities rather than purchase an unexplained bundle. NewsPass supports SEO, PR and GEO goals through search visibility, media presence, credibility and discoverability in AI answers; its available opportunities should still be assessed against the campaign’s audience and evidence. Neither product removes the need for an accurate route description.
Build a small mix where each item has a job: a specialist explanation, a broader contextual story, an expert interview or a resource that sales can use. Avoid copying the same unsupported message across numerous sites simply to increase the count. Record the cost, effort, audience hypothesis and evidence you will review after publication. Keep your own outreach active where the story merits independent attention. At review time, assess the published content and observed response before deciding to repeat a route. Useful learning includes discovering that an apparently attractive publication was a poor fit or that a modest specialist story served the buyer better.

Fieldmark’s agency compares three opportunities for an implementation story. A famous general-interest domain offers a short commercial article with little room for the method. A specialist maintenance title has a relevant professional audience and an editor interested in the workflow trade-off. A Marketplace option provides a clearly described paid contribution that can explain the practical checklist within the client’s budget. The agency prioritizes the independent specialist pitch and presents the commercial option separately, with the client choosing the publication and approving terms. A previous sampled AI answer cited another article from the specialist title, but the proposal labels that as historical evidence, not a guarantee for Fieldmark’s story. After publication, the team will inspect the actual article, relevant traffic and future sampled answers. Each route has a purpose even if no AI citation appears during the review window.
Another agency promises that a publication with a high authority score will put the client into every major AI answer. It cannot identify the exact section, commercial label or audience. The resulting article is generic and poorly matched to the implementation question. When no citation is observed, the agency buys more copies of the same text. The original selection was based on an unsupported algorithmic promise rather than useful information, route clarity or a reason the intended reader would care.
A source cited once is not permanently preferred, and a familiar domain is not a substitute for inspecting the actual opportunity. Publication selection should remain valuable for a human audience and a clear campaign purpose. Treat potential AI discovery as something to observe alongside those benefits, rather than the only justification for the spend.
Inventory, publisher terms and editorial availability change. Verify the selected opportunity before ordering or presenting it as committed. Do not imply that authority metrics are Google scores or that any commercial placement guarantees indexing, referral visits, independent endorsement, rankings or inclusion in AI-generated answers.

A specialist publication appeared in one saved AI answer, while a supplier offers a high-authority paid article and promises universal AI citations. Your client wants a relevant implementation story within budget. Which publication-selection approach is strongest before any purchase or outreach commitment?
