Define a useful comparison

Choose a search type, date window and relevant segment before interpreting the report. Compare periods that account for weekday patterns and seasonality where possible. Country, device, query and page filters can reveal different stories hidden inside a property total. Record filters so a colleague can reproduce the observation instead of reacting to an unexplained screenshot.

Read metrics together

Impressions describe exposure, clicks describe selected visits and click-through rate relates the two. Average position aggregates observations and is not a stable universal rank. A change in query mix can move an average without any individual page suffering the assumed decline. Interpret metrics together with the search experience, the page’s purpose and the business outcomes that matter.

Find the decision behind the query

Look for meaningful customer needs that existing pages answer poorly, or relevant pages whose descriptions fail to communicate their usefulness. Inspect the actual content before editing. High impressions and low click-through rate can reflect broad exposure, intent mismatch or features that satisfy the query without a visit. It does not automatically mean the title needs more persuasive language.

Verify before prioritizing

Check indexing and technical evidence when a page unexpectedly loses visibility, and compare affected groups against unaffected ones. Search Console and analytics describe different events and will not match perfectly. Query privacy and reporting limits also affect detail. Convert an observation into a testable hypothesis, a specific action and a review date rather than treating a report as a diagnosis.

Read a query-page pattern in context

Comparison queries · guide

Impressions steady; clicks steady → core task may still be served.

Broad information queries · guide

New impressions; few clicks → inspect intent and result experience.

Mobile product pages

Clicks down after template release → inspect technical and page evidence.

Next decision

Different patterns justify different checks, not a blanket title rewrite.

Illustrative report without fabricated measured figures. Filters, periods and query mix must accompany a real comparison.

See it in practice

Hypothetical example: a furniture retailer sees impressions rise for a buying guide while clicks remain flat. A query review shows new exposure for broad informational searches that rarely lead immediately to a product visit. The guide’s core comparison queries remain steady. Rather than rewriting the title to promise cheap products, the editor checks whether the expanded audience needs a clearer explanation of materials and links to relevant category pages. Separately, a mobile product-page segment shows a sharp click decline after a template change, prompting technical inspection. The director assigns different actions to these two patterns and records filters and dates. The report becomes a starting point for investigation instead of a single instruction to rewrite every low-CTR page.

Compare the alternative

A consultant exports all pages below a fixed click-through threshold and replaces their titles with aggressive sales claims. The list mixes branded pages, informational answers, different devices and queries with different result layouts. Some pages were doing their intended job well. A uniform rule ignores the context that creates the metric and risks making accurate descriptions less useful while leaving the actual technical or intent problem unresolved.

Avoid this misconception

Misconception: average position is the exact rank every customer sees. Correction: it is an aggregate within the report’s definitions and filters. Search context and query mix vary, so inspect meaningful segments before drawing page-level conclusions.

Know the boundary

Low-volume segments can be noisy or incomplete, and a report cannot reveal every reason someone did not click. Combine available data with page inspection and customer understanding; do not manufacture precision from a small sample.

Do this today · 25 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Select one important page and compare two suitable periods. Record the query and device mix, state one plausible explanation and one alternative, then propose a proportionate action and a way to check whether it helped.

Before you start

Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.

Practise with this scenario

A service page gains impressions but the query mix shifts from commercial enquiries to general definitions.

Your steps

  • Filter Search Console to the relevant page and comparable periods.
  • Record query, device and country mix before interpreting the headline clicks or impressions.
  • Write one plausible explanation and an alternative that could produce the same aggregate pattern.
  • Choose a proportionate page or targeting action and save the filters for a later comparable review.

What better looks like

Before: More impressions automatically means better commercial performance.

After: Query intent and customer relevance qualify the interpretation of visibility.

Verify your work

  • The comparison records filters, periods and relevant seasonality.
  • Metrics are interpreted together rather than as automatic thresholds.
  • An actionable hypothesis is checked against page and technical evidence.

Follow up

Revisit the saved view after the action and compare qualified outcomes alongside search counts.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A buying guide gains impressions while clicks stay flat. Its new exposure comes mostly from broad informational searches, while core comparison queries remain steady. A colleague recommends rewriting the title as a discount offer. What should the director do first?
