Choosing When to Use SEO, Paid Search or Both

Choose a channel mix from urgency, economics and the customer’s decision rather than loyalty to a channel.

Separate the jobs

Organic search earns discoverability through useful, accessible material and other relevant signals over time. Paid search buys opportunities to show an eligible ad in an auction. Both can answer an existing need, but their operating constraints differ. Define whether the immediate job is testing demand, capturing purchase intent, explaining a complex choice or developing durable resources.

Match the planning horizon

A time-limited offer may need paid distribution while an organic resource is still being developed. A recurring customer question may justify sustained editorial and technical investment. Organic work has costs and uncertain timing; an advertising budget does not guarantee profitable demand. Plan both channels around the period in which the business needs evidence and outcomes.

Compare incremental economics

A sale attributed to an ad is not automatically a sale caused by that ad. Some buyers would have arrived through an organic result or an existing relationship. Compare contribution after acquisition costs and investigate overlap, especially on branded searches. A credible allocation considers additional customers, operational capacity and the value of learning alongside reported channel totals.

Share learning without assuming equivalence

Search terms, objections and landing-page feedback from a paid experiment can improve an organic brief. Organic customer questions can inform ad groups and offers. However, ad click-through rates do not predict organic rankings, and paid visitors may behave differently. Record which insight transfers, the supporting evidence and which channel-specific assumption still needs its own test.

Choose a channel for the scenario

Deadline soon · clear purchase intent

Consider a capped paid-search test with verified economics.

Recurring complex question

Invest in a credible organic resource and realistic maintenance.

Both needs · adequate capacity

Coordinate the resource and test while keeping separate horizons.

Weak offer or broken journey

Repair the constraint before scaling either channel.

Urgency, demand, economics and resources determine the mix. Neither free traffic nor instant profit is assumed.

See it in practice

Hypothetical example: a specialist training company has six weeks to fill a new workshop and wants a lasting position in its field. It allocates a capped paid-search test to purchase-intent queries and builds a clear workshop page with dates, prerequisites and prices. Separately, it commissions an expert guide answering recurring course-selection questions. The team measures qualified bookings and contribution from the short campaign, while evaluating the guide’s usefulness, discovery and assisted inquiries over a longer period. If ads generate low-quality inquiries, it revises targeting and the offer before increasing spend. It does not wait for an organic ranking promise, nor does it cancel the educational resource merely because it cannot prove immediate payback during launch week.

Compare the alternative

A director sends every visitor to a generic homepage and declares paid search superior because its dashboard shows immediate conversions. Meanwhile, the company’s organic guide supplies much of the information prospects need before purchasing. The comparison ignores different jobs and overlapping journeys. A stronger review examines the landing experience, qualified outcomes, costs and evidence of additional demand before reallocating money away from a useful resource.

Avoid this misconception

Misconception: SEO is free traffic and advertising is instant profit. Correction: both consume money and attention, and either can attract visitors who never become suitable customers. Include content, technical, creative and management costs in the decision.

Know the boundary

Small campaigns may not generate enough evidence to estimate incrementality precisely. Use bounded experiments and clearly labeled uncertainty rather than treating a short, noisy attribution report as proof of channel superiority.

Do this today · 25 minutes

Turn this lesson into a useful action.

Choose a real offer. Write its deadline, target buyer, contribution per sale and main information gap. Propose one organic investment and one capped paid test, with a distinct success measure and review date for each.

Before you start

Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.

Practise with this scenario

A new service needs enquiries this month while its long-term educational resource is still being prepared.

Your steps

  • Record the deadline, target buyer, contribution assumptions and current information gap.
  • Define an organic asset that can build durable usefulness and a separate capped paid test.
  • Check that both routes lead to a relevant working destination.
  • Assign distinct success measures and review dates rather than comparing unlike channel stages as one contest.

What better looks like

Before: Choose one channel as universally superior.

After: Use channels for distinct time horizons and customer tasks.

Verify your work

  • Each channel has a defined customer job and planning horizon.
  • Costs and qualified outcomes use comparable definitions.
  • The plan checks overlap and states what remains uncertain.

Follow up

Review qualified outcomes and actual costs before expanding the paid test or content scope.

Before you move on

Make the decision.

A training business needs workshop bookings within six weeks and also wants to become a trusted resource for future buyers. Its director can fund a modest advertising test and an expert guide. Which plan best matches the two business needs?
