Module 11 / Lesson 62 · Read, apply, check
Select one page improvement using comparable search evidence rather than a universal click-through-rate target.
Open the Search results performance report for a verified property. Choose a search type, a useful period and a comparison with matching weekdays. Apply a page filter before examining queries. A site-wide average mixes unrelated audiences and can hide the actual opportunity.
Look for a page whose queries match a valuable customer task and whose content you can improve. High impressions alone do not establish commercial value. Record device and country because a change in audience mix can alter clicks without any deterioration in the page.
Open the page and representative results. Check whether the title, answer and next action match the observed query intent. Average position is an aggregate, not a promise of a fixed ranking. Missing query rows and reporting limits also constrain conclusions from an export.
Write a hypothesis tied to one visible weakness, then save the baseline and change date. Choose a realistic observation window based on traffic volume and demand. Implementing one well-defined correction gives a clearer learning opportunity than rewriting every element simultaneously.
40 ÷ 2,000 = 2%; 42 ÷ 2,100 = 2%.
Relevant mobile queries ask about same-day appointments.
The page does not explain verified booking availability.
Clarify availability, then monitor qualified bookings and comparable queries.
Hypothetical exercise: a repair page receives 2,000 impressions and 40 clicks in one four-week period, then 2,100 impressions and 42 clicks in another. Both periods have a two percent click-through rate. The owner calls the second period a failure because impressions grew. The analyst filters to mobile and finds that most queries concern same-day appointments, while the page describes repairs but never explains booking availability. She checks with operations, adds accurate booking guidance and records the change. Her proposed outcome is more qualified appointment enquiries, with query-level clicks as supporting evidence. She does not predict a ranking increase or treat the unchanged rate as proof of a technical penalty.
A different page loses impressions because the seasonal product is no longer in demand. Its relevant queries, response behavior and offer remain sound. Rewriting the title to chase an arbitrary click-through target would not repair demand. The analyst first compares the same season and checks product availability. A sensible decision may be to preserve the page and prepare the next seasonal campaign rather than make an unsupported optimization.
Misconception: every page below a fixed click-through rate needs a new title. Result layouts, query intent, brand familiarity and device mix change what a useful rate means. Diagnose the specific page before prescribing a change.
Without a verified property, use the sample below. Treat the exercise as analysis practice, not a claim about a real website. Small samples may justify a longer observation period rather than an immediate verdict.
