Module 06 / Lesson 37 · Read, apply, check
Create a repeatable AI visibility observation plan and report its uncertainty without inventing market-wide precision.
Choose questions that represent meaningful audience tasks, including evaluation, comparison and relevant factual needs. Record why each belongs in the sample. A list chosen because it already produces favorable answers will bias the result. Keep the core set stable for comparisons while documenting additions when customer needs or products change.
Capture platform, mode, date, language, location where relevant and whether the session is personalized. Save the question wording and classify mentions and citations consistently. Outputs can vary across runs and versions. Repeated observations help reveal variability, but they do not convert a convenience sample into a census of every user’s experience.
Define the metric before calculating it. For example, brand presence rate in a sample is the number of observed answers mentioning the brand divided by the number of sampled answers. State the sample size and missing observations. A percentage from ten selected prompts should not be presented as the brand’s overall share of all AI search activity.
Inspect incorrect descriptions, missing useful evidence and patterns across relevant tasks. Use those findings to prioritize source corrections or content improvements, then observe again under comparable conditions. Report referral and business outcomes separately. An increase in sampled mentions may be encouraging, but it does not by itself prove the campaign caused broader visibility or revenue growth.
Same comparison prompt → correct mention, no citation.
Same prompt and settings → omitted brand.
Same prompt and settings → linked source, description needs checking.
Record variability, accuracy and sample limits. Three runs are not a market-wide visibility percentage.
Hypothetical example: a software company observes twenty predefined buyer questions on two named platforms each month. It records mentions, citation destinations, identity accuracy and the conditions of each run. In one illustrative month, eight of twenty observed answers on one platform mention the brand, producing a sample presence rate of forty percent. The analyst explicitly labels the figure as a result for that question set and observation period. A second run produces different answers for several questions, so the report includes that variability. The team uses recurring factual errors to prioritize corrections. It does not advertise forty percent market share or attribute every change to the latest media campaign without stronger evidence.
A vendor tests hundreds of prompts, keeps only the favorable outputs and shows a single rising visibility score without the question set or denominator. The client cannot tell whether the score changed because the brand improved, the prompts changed or the platform behaved differently. Asking for a transparent method and comparable observations is more useful than accepting precision that cannot be inspected.
Misconception: one successful prompt proves stable AI visibility. Correction: it proves that a particular output was observed under particular conditions. Repeatability, sampling choices and platform changes determine how cautiously the result should be generalized.
Small businesses may use a modest manual sample rather than a large monitoring service. That can still inform decisions if the limits are explicit. More observations help only when the method remains relevant, consistent and honestly reported.

Create a ten-question observation sheet with platform, date, exact prompt, mention, citation destination and accuracy notes. Define one sample metric and write the limitation sentence that must appear beside any reported percentage.
Use an authorized page or campaign relevant to this lesson, or work entirely from the illustrative sample below. Record proposed changes as drafts until they are approved and implemented.
Ten fixed customer questions will be observed on one AI platform, with date and session context recorded.
Before: One favorable response becomes a claim of universal AI dominance.
After: A bounded ten-question observation records both positive and negative outcomes.

Use the same documented sample for comparison and investigate changed conditions before interpreting movement.
Before you move on
A report says a brand has forty percent AI market share because it appeared in eight of twenty selected answers on one platform. The questions were manually chosen and outputs vary between runs. What is the most accurate way to present and use this finding?
