Read the story & commentary question

AltFee Solutions won Clio’s 2026 Integration Award for Best Business of Law App for a pricing platform that centralizes pricing guidelines, value-based pricing, budgeting, historical performance data and analytics. The company highlights integration with Clio Manage and says the tool helps firms price matters, track fixed-fee performance, and reduce disconnected systems.

Consider whether adopting integrated pricing and budgeting tools could improve fee consistency, matter profitability tracking, and billing workflows in your firm.

Consider: What internal data sources and governance processes would you need to integrate to trust a pricing platform’s matter-fee recommendations?

Pisgah Legal Services sues NC over legal aid funding

Read the story & commentary question

Pisgah Legal Services joined Legal Aid of North Carolina and Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy in a Wake County lawsuit challenging legislation that redirects IOLTA funds to the state’s Private Assigned Counsel Fund. Pisgah says the changes could reduce its ability to serve clients, citing prior IOLTA grants that supported disaster recovery and other civil legal services.

Consider contingency planning for nonprofit legal services and private firms that rely on IOLTA-funded partnerships or referrals if grant streams are redirected or limited.

Consider: What contingency funding or service-priority plans would you establish if IOLTA grants to civil legal services are reduced or reallocated?

Suit challenges NC budget’s changes to low-income legal aid program

Read the story & commentary question

Three North Carolina legal aid organizations filed suit in Wake County alleging recent state budget provisions altered the IOLTA program and conflicted with a 2007 North Carolina Supreme Court order that made the program mandatory and supervised by the Court. The complaint says the budget changes repurpose IOLTA funds and change Court oversight and fund uses.

Consider whether your firm’s civil legal aid collaborations, pro bono planning, or funding-dependent programs could be affected by state-level IOLTA changes and related litigation outcomes.

Consider: If the legislature’s budget provisions are upheld, how would your organization adjust budgeting and service delivery models that rely on IOLTA grants?
