Manufacturers are very curious about the way the consumers use their products. For that reason they’ve created a system called carrier IQ integrated to smartphones that allows them to get a feedback from their users. They want to take any remark from users to get to know how the handset is performing.

For you the owner of the device, having to always give a feedback anytime there is a performance fail out is not that fun especially when you want to quickly move on to things that really matter to you. So the question arises as to whether or not there is a way to get rid of it.

Another reason why you would want to get rid of the carrier IQ is that, to some extent, it takes your privacy away. The carrier IQ is a 3rd party metrics service tracking millions of smartphone users. One of the goals is to improve the quality of the service but who knows what else can be done with the data. Here is how to disable the Carrier IQ on your handset.

On iPhone

Go to Settings > General > About > Diagnostics and Usage. Inside the Diagnostics and Usage you will be given the option to either send the report or not. Just tap on the “Don’t send”. You are done with carrier IQ service.

According to Apple the latest iPhone 5 doesn’t have the IQ metrics integrated to it but for those using older models, they will have to manually disable it.

Removing IQ in Android phones

You may want to first find out if you do have the metric installed on our Android phone. The easiest way to do that is by relying on apps like the Carrier IQ Detector found in the Google Play Store. Keep in mind that the app only detects the presence of the monitoring software but it does not remove it because that can affect the proper functioning of the phone

For those who know how to flash their Android handset to a custom ROM, this can be a straight forward way of removing the 3rd party metric as most custom ROM already have that metric removed.

Because there are many different variations of Android devices you might have to do a bit a a research for your specific phone to find out if there is a much easier way to remove or disable the IQ service. Other than that you may have to rely on a professional.

Remove Carrier IQ from Blackberry phones

It is relatively easy to delete the Carrier IQ on the Blackberry but depending on the version you are using the steps might differ slightly. It can be done in 3 key steps.

Step 1: this steps is the same for all versions. Go to the Options menu
Step 2: In this step you need to find the IQ agent. It is somewhere there under Options but you will have to search a bit. In Blackberry OS 6.0 or later, you should be able to find it at Options > Device > Application Management. Find IQ Agent.

Step 3: Once you’ve found the IQ Agent just press the menu button and choose delete. You will then have to restart you handset and the carrier IQ will be gone.
