Apple iPhone Has Wealthiest Users With Median Household Income Of $105,200

Apple didn’t become the world’s largest company by market cap and value by selling its products cheaply. But just in case you were in doubt about just how well off the so-called Apple ‘fanboys’ are, Forrester Research took a look into the numbers.

And some numbers they are; it turns out that the Apple iPhone and the applications that come with it are used by some of America’s wealthiest young people. Among major mobile OS makers, iOS had a 34% reach among generation Y users (ages 23 – 31). It had a 32% reach among generation X users (ages 32 – 45) and a 16% reach among generation Z users (ages 18 – 22).

Reach of course doesn’t mean much if the people you reach don’t spend money and this is where Apple leaves the competition in the dust. The average household income of iOS users is $105,200. RIM on the other hand, has a median household income of $95,400 but due to a lack of reach, Apple continues to dominate the sales and commercial activity of applications. Android users have a median household income of 89,300 with Windows Phone coming in at $81,100.

The stats show that mobile phone users in the US are fairly well off across all platforms but the difference is reach. It is this level of penetration among users that has allowed Apple to dominate even though it is still only second overall as a popular mobile OS among American smartphone users.
