Apple iPhone 5 Sold Out In 60 Minutes
The launch of the iPhone 5 was eagerly awaited by millions and when Apple opened the lines for per-ordering recently, those eager beavers didn’t disappoint. Unlike the iPhone 4S which took 22 hours to sell out of its launch-day stock, the iPhone 5 was all gone in 60 minutes.
The rush to get hands on the new iPhone was a frenzy, the likes of which caused several server-crashing problems for both Apple and some of its carriers. Many visitors were met with error messages when they tried to access certain sites to place their orders and in one case, visitors were sent to an adult chat service by mistake. But not even that bit of comedy was enough to dampen the rush for the new phone.
A bigger screen and faster processor have helped build up expectations and Apple has had to adjust its shipping expectation from 2 to 3 weeks. And as one buyer put it: “Available to ship: 2 weeks… man that last week it’s gonna feel like you have an old cement block in your pocket.”
To say that Apple has hit a home-run on this one is an understatement. Many have already predicted that the iPhone 5 will outsell all previous iterations of the smartphone put together. A 16GB iPhone 5 starts at $199 while the 64GB version starts at $399. When the sales are tabulated in a few months’ time, I am sure we can expect some record breaking revenue figures from Apple.
