Facebook Login Is Used By Only 6% Of Online Retailers

Sites include . Published on September 22nd, 2012. Written by Anthony West.

With Facebook being so popular, you’d think that online retailers would flock to use the various integration tools that Facebook offers. A new study into adoption by retailers, however, shows a different picture.

Social Labs took a look into how online retailers have used the Facebook Login Button to control how users create accounts, register on sites and manage their login activities. 500 sites retailers were questioned in the study and only 30 confirmed the use of the Facebook login button.

The 6% take-up is considered to be a “missed opportunity” by Social Labs, not least because using the button makes access and interaction so easy for a website’s users. Not to mention the benefit of having users refer their friends and family through Facebook.

The study found that a large majority of online retailers are slow to implement the button because of lack of technical expertise. Many also feel that integrating the button into their sites will compromise their overall business security. Indeed a great many online retailers (around 30%) implemented the button incorrectly, so it seems the fears are rooted in something real.

That aside though, Social Labs concluded that adoption will increase as more and more online retailers see the benefits of using Facebook to build their customer base and generate revenues.

  1. We tried this with a well supported .net blog – it failed miserably – 2 days and countless retries to research and support – sadly it lacks … we did try hard – I guess give it 2 years to develop properly and for more users to trust it and for it to carry more relevant data for shopping cart companies – and all should be good. Cheers Kev Web Developer.
