18% Of People Watch TV Online Every Day
The laptop, desktop and smartphone may be steadily taking our content consumption away from the TV but there is still a group of die-hearted supporters of the TV. So committed are these people that they actually prefer to access their online content via their TV sets.
NPD DisplaySearch has taken a look at the growing trend and found that presently a whopping 18% of consumers prefer to access their content in this way. The data seems solid and was gleaned from the viewing habits of people in several regions. Director of Consumer Insights at NPD DisplaySearch, Riddhi Patel, explained why the trend is emerging: “Online content is mostly viewed on computers or mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones, but TVs are increasingly becoming devices of choice for consumers, particularly since an increasing numbers of sets have either built-in connectivity or can be connected to the internet via a peripheral device such as a connected Blu-ray layer or set top box, among others.”
It seems also that the very social nature of the TV makes it a preference for a growing lot of people. Laptops and smartphones have a individuality towards them and people consume content on these devices when they are largely alone. The TV makes it possible for groups of people to enjoy content and this is helping to drive the consumption of online content over TV sets.
The new findings will be good news for manufacturers of TV sets and will probably spark a revolution in overall design and connectivity.
