India Spends 25% Of Its Time Online
People in India love the internet and social networking so much that they spend a whopping 25% of their time online surfing, chatting and networking.
This is what is coming out of ComScore who took the time to measure the level of internet use among Indians. Based on data analyzed, social networking as a past time grew in June by 0.8 percentage points to close out at 25.2% year-on-year. Entertainment, another category which ComScore looked at took up 10% of online activity with emails and other activities taking up about 8%.
But it’s the social networking and Facebook story which is big news. India represents one of the biggest growth market for Facebook and other social networking platform. News that more and more Indians are getting faster and faster internet access will be seen as a huge boost potentially—especially given the fact that Facebook hasn’t really grown stateside in many months.
Driving the boom in online activity among Indians is the widespread popularity of browsing on the go (mobile for short). Mobile connections according to ComScore are expected to surpass PC connections this year. Already many big name smartphone makers have started making handsets specifically for the Indian market.
With the world’s second largest concentration of people, there is certainly a lot to play for in India; Google, Facebook, Samsung, all have a vested interest in seeing Indians prosper on get online.
