Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.
Facebook Is Now The 2nd Largest Video Site In America
Move over Yahoo, Facebook is now the second largest video site in the US. The rather shocking bit of news came from ComScore who published their latest rankings for monthly online video data.
Leading the way of course, is Google/YouTube which combined racked up over 184 million unique views for the month of July. Yahoo had been a perennial second place runner until people started using Facebook to consume online video. In July Facebook racked up 53 million views as opposed to the 48, million views recorded by Yahoo.
In real terms this new trend may add to the on-going troubles of Yahoo. Newly appointed CEO, Mayer will need to ensure that Facebook doesn’t build too big a gap between itself and the now third-placed Yahoo. For Facebook, the news will be seen positively; especially given the recent trading woes of the companies listed stock. Hovering below $20 a share, Facebook’s stock has seen consistent eroding since debuting on the stock market back in May. If engagement is rising so much so that video consumption is becoming an asset, Zuckerberg may just be able to squeeze some more revenues out of the 900 million or so active users that Facebook has.
It’s clear that with the acquisition of YouTube, Google ensured dominance of the online video space for the foreseeable future. Those fighting for second place had better try to hold on it since it’s the best they can hope for.
