AT&T Activated 3.7 Million iPhones Last Quarter
How popular is the iPhone? So popular that it accounted for 73% of AT&T’s smartphone activations last quarter. In all 5.1 million smartphones were activated and the iPhone was 3.7 million of those.
And it’s not just AT&T which is benefiting from the tremendous popularity of the iPhone; Verizon released its figures and sure enough, the premier smartphone made by Apple takes the biscuit there too. According to Verizon’s latest figures, the iPhone accounted for 2.7 million activations or around 45% of the company’s total smartphone activations.
AT&T gave some insight into the popularity of smartphones and their churn levels in its quarterly financial statement: “Strong Smartphone Sales Continue. AT&T sold 5.1 million smartphones in the second quarter. Smartphones represented 77 percent of postpaid device sales. At the end of the quarter, 61.9 percent, or 43.1 million, of AT&T’s postpaid subscribers had smartphones, up from 49.9 percent, or 34.1 million, a year earlier. AT&T’s ARPU for smartphones is twice that of non-smartphone subscribers, and about 88 percent of smartphone subscribers are on FamilyTalk(R) or business plans. Churn levels for these subscribers are significantly lower than for other postpaid subscribers. More than one-third of AT&T’s postpaid smartphone customers use a 4G-capable device.”
If things are this good for Apple now, what will happen in a few months’ time when the mother of all smartphone hits the market. The iPhone 5 is expected to send people lining up overnight and shatter sales records.
