You’ve probably never heard of ‘mobile phone separation anxiety’ or ‘nomophobia’ but they are real phenomena that are affecting mobile phone users right now.

T-Mobile took a look into how mobile phone use is impacting modern life and found that most people are so glued to their phone that they would rather have it on them than a credit card. A whopping 29% of people would leave their house without cash than leave without their mobile phone.

So addicted are people nowadays to their mobile phones that 11% said they would rather leave the house without wearing pants than leave their cherished mobile phone behind. 63% said without hesitation that they would climb through rubbish to get to a lost mobile device.

2 in 5 Americans would begin to miss their smartphone in less than hour without it and men it seems have a higher tolerance for going without their phones. According to the study, women said they could only go around 7 hours without their mobile phones; men lasted slightly longer at 9 hours.

This real condition called nomophobia is quintessentially a 21st century and decidedly Western disease. And like most other decidedly Western ailments, it probably won’t go away anytime soon. In fact, it may get worse before it gets better.
