40 Million Users Are On Skype At One Time

Sites include . Published on July 31st, 2012. Written by Anthony West.

Skype has grown so much in the last few years that it has started to rival mainstream phone companies with its VOIP protocol. This dominance of Skype is very noticeable in the area of international calling. In 2011 it is estimated that Skype logged over 47 billion minutes in international calls, as opposed to the 19 billion that was logged by international long distance providers.

This record setting number of minutes of course means that a lot of people are using Skype (663 million at the end of 2010). It means also that there are quite a few simultaneous connections that take place. Skype usually kept this data under wraps but at the start of this year the company started releasing the number of simultaneous users logged into the site.

According to data disclosed in February 2012, there were 32 million people logged into Skype at the same time. This number grew steadily as the months went on and at the end of April 2012; Skype had reached 40 million simultaneous users.

Skype has also seen increased use from government agencies and the criminal justice system in particular, is a big fan of Skype. These days many testimonies are broadcast in the courtroom via Skype.

It’s little wonder then that Microsoft wasted no time in snapping up the company, and today, Skype is thriving.
