Google Now Has 50.9% Smartphone Market Share

comScore’s latest MobiLens report spins an interesting tale, the biggest detail of which being Google’s dominance of the smartphone market. On the back of Android Google has been doing a number on the likes of Apple and the company’s share of the mobile pie jumped from 50.1% in February to 50.9% at the end of May.

Apple also saw some growth jumping from 30.2% to 31.9%–a net growth of 1.7%. But perhaps the biggest disappointment was Microsoft and its Windows Phone offering. Despite strong reviews from critics the Windows Phone doesn’t seem to be gaining traction with users and saw an overall drop of 0.4% since January of this year. It did grow 0.1% between February and May but according to comScore, the software maker saw an overall year-on-year decline of 1.9%.

Ultimately it comes down to one thing and that is Google’s dominance. Even the people that use the Windows Phone has shown Microsoft that there is an inherent preference for Google’s products as most have ditched Hotmail in favor of Gmail. It’s going to be an endless game of catch-up for Microsoft and if Apple’s success is anything to go by, Google and Android have an unassailable lead.

Other companies in the report also had modest growth including RIM (Blackberry) which saw a 0.1% growth between February and May.
