Google Made $37 Billion On Adwords Last Year

Sites include . Published on July 17th, 2012. Written by Anthony West.

Google built its empire on search and the rewards have been big over the years. Last year (2011) the company made a whopping $37 billion from AdWords while at the same time becoming one of the biggest online ad spenders.

While the revenue from the global domination of AdWords wasn’t all that surprising, Google’s entry on Ad Age’s 100 Leading National Advertisers was a big surprise for many. The company ranked number 34 as a result of its $1.5 billion spent on advertising some of its core products. This was also bolstered by the $1 billion spent promoting Motorola Mobility in 2011. All told Google is now more than just a place to buy ads; it is also now a massive player sucking up inventory all over the place.

On the selling side of things, Google has shown why its insistence on preserving search relevance was a wise choice. When Yahoo and Microsoft took to making their search engines fancy, Google kept it simple. Today AdWords and other internal ad selling platforms owned by Google account for more than 96% of global revenues.

Google will no doubt ramp its promotion of Motorola Mobility in the next few years and now that Android is picking up steam, we can expect even greater things from the search giant.
