Imgur Hits 2 Billion Page Views Per Month
Imgur is one those photo sharing services that you either love or absolutely detest. The former seems to be the case with at least 3 million people—this is the number of uniques that the site is claiming each month.
But it gets even better than that. So popular is Imgur that it has for the first time surpassed the 2 billion page views mark. This is significant because it was only in February of 2012 that Imgur smashed the 1 billion page views mark. In little over 2 months, the site has doubled its page views and things look to be heading up and up.
So what makes Imgur so popular? It looks like it’s the blend of photo sharing and humor. Quite a lot of images shared on the site are gifs (those moving things that are almost always something hilarious). Users are now uploading over 500,000 images a day and viewing a mind numbing 1 billion images a day. That is a combination of gifs and regular pictures of course, but nonetheless that is some staggering photo sharing.
With sites like Twitpic and Instagram competing heavily for photo sharing dominance, Imgur is a miracle for its growth alone. Its founder Alan Schaff is keen to point out the subtleties between ‘images and photos’ in the world on online sharing. According to Schaff, “You would put your photos on places like Facebook or Flickr,” said Schaff, “but if you just have an image – which can be like a screenshot, a meme, something you hacked together in PhotoShop – you need a place for those too. We want to be that place.”
Schaff and the fine folks over at Imgur seems to be getting quite a lot of that action and the site (and company) is surely one to watch.
