Foursquare Surpasses 20 Million Users & 2 Billion Checkins
Location-based service Foursquare is making huge strides and has now successfully surpassed the 20 million user mark. The landmark day was dubbed 4sqDay by Foursquare’s legion of users, and by the look of things this milestone may be eclipsed before the year is out. That’s because it was only in June of last year that Foursquare had 10 million users and in just 9 months it’s doubled that number.
Checkins are up too and there has now been over 2 billion checkins on the platform. As a reward for checking in on 4sqDay, users are given a badge in commemoration of the achievement.
Analysts are excited about Foursquare’s growth not least because it’s one of the few social networking Applications that actually puts its data to good use in an effort to earn revenue. Path.com, a social networking platform for people who prefer to keep those close to them connected uses Foursquare to power the location-based portion of its service.
The platform is also looking to compete heavily with Yelp and Google with its new Exploration service which lets users find local bars and restaurants. Right now the service is a fledgling one so it’s hard to tell how well it will stack up against giants like Yelp. At any rate, Foursquare users look set to make the platform a success.
