5 Billion Users Will Be On The Internet By 2020
The internet is growing at such an alarming rate that one wonders what the landscape or should I say ‘internet-scape’ is going to be like in the coming future. There’s lots of talk about the net being more of ‘who’ we are—scary stuff when you think about it, but that seems to be where things are headed.
Of course there’s no guarantee that the net will transform into some technological monster in the next 20 years, but it is clear that there will be more users. A recent study conducted by Visual.ly tips the internet to be around 5 billion users strong by the end of 2020—that’s just 8 short years away.
With such massive projected growth you’d expect that the infrastructure that underpins it all will need some boosting too. Presently there are over 575 million host computers that power the web, but that is expected to change. In the coming years the net will be less about computers, and more about sensors and external circuitry connected to buildings and other objects.
In the coming years rising sectors such as Cloud computing are expected to play a major part in the growth of the web. Cloud computing in particular will generate an estimated $45.4 billion by 2015. Add the near billions of users that will come online from Asia and one can see how the internet is going to swell at seams by 2020.
