Tumblr Surpasses 20 Billion Total Posts

Sites include . Published on April 17th, 2012. Written by Anthony West.

Last November Tumblr shattered expectations by surpassing the 12 billion posts mark—that was barely 6 months ago and Tumblr is at it again.

This time the fast-growing blogging platform has surpassed the 20 billion posts mark. The achievement almost went beyond notice and even the folks at Tumblr didn’t make too much noise about it. A simple post on Tumblr’s main account sort of summed up the modesty: “Forgot to make a big deal of this earlier, but Tumblr crossed the 20-billion-post mark Monday night”.

Of course “Monday night” has long since gone and that 20 billion mark is perhaps closer to 20.5 billion. Tumblr gets around 51 million posts a day and currently has around 49.7 million blogs active. It is also tipped to reach the 50 million blogs mark pretty soon, so as a going concern, the platform is looking pretty nifty indeed.

Tumblr’s nearest competitor of sorts is WordPress which currently counts 72 million blogs. But WordPress has wider appeal and many WordPress blogs are self-hosted. Tumblr will have so ways to go before it really starts banging on WordPress’ door but for now the company seems to be quietly building its following.
