200 Billion Spam Emails Are Sent Every Day

You probably don’t need a fancy infographic or an extensive study to prove the existence of spam—heaven knows all our inboxes are solid proof of that. But just in case you wanted to get into the scale of email spam these days, the fine folks over at Neolane.com has crunched a few numbers—just or our insight.

Dubbed ‘What If Spam Were True’ the study took an exploratory look at what Spam would look like if it operated in much the same way it does in your email on your Facebook account. The study found that over 200 spam emails are sent daily by people ranging from the ubiquitous Viagra seller, all the way to the ‘Free Ipad’ guy.

This level of spam has altered our behavior over the years and the study found that people no longer unsubscribe from emails, they just hit the spam button. This of course is terrible news from genuine email marketers who are constantly battling to get through the spam filters and grab the attention of prospects.

The deluge of spam is also wreaking havoc on legitimate emails. The study found that a whopping 75% of emails reported as spam were actually ‘graymail’ or emails that are legitimate communication.

It’s particularly interesting to note that despite very potent anti-spam legislation, spam is as alive as ever. I suppose the battle will evolve as time wears on.
