Wikia Gets 50 Million Unique Visitors Per Month
We are so used to seeing Jimmy Wales as the face of non-profit Wikipedia that we could scarcely imagine that he heads up another business that is very much all about making money. I am talking of course about Wikia, Wales’ money-making version of Wikipedia and is sort of an umbrella company and website for hosting information.
Largely ad-supported, Wikia has been growing in traffic for quite some time and apparently there are plans to make the company and website portal a household name over the coming months. The company now has a new CEO (Craig Palmer) and is listed by Neilsen as one of the fastest growing blog social networks in the US in 2011. Traffic is growing pretty fast as you can imagine and Wikia currently gets around 50 million unique visitors per month.
But its Wikia’s future that has everyone talking. The site currently has over 339,000 communities and is adding around 600 new ones every day. Traffic is growing 42% year upon year and many are predicting that by the end of 2012, most if not all will have heard or experienced in some way, content generated and hosted by a Wiki found on Wikia.
