Apple App Store Reaches 25 Billion Downloads
As milestones go, it really doesn’t get bigger than 25 billion, and we can now report that Apple has made a bit of history with its App Store. The company had been running an online competition for several weeks, starting back on February 13, 2012 to honor the 25 billionth App download. The lucky winner was tipped to get $10,000 in gift vouchers redeemable through Apple’s iTunes store.
Well as at today, that milestone has been achieved. The company posted a big thank you on its iTunes homepage to mark the achievement. The message basically showed some gratitude to all 25 billion people who downloaded an app or another and urged visitors to come back to the page later in order to find out who the winner is.
Of course, this latest milestone will be a powerful message to those who have been watching the Android mobile operating system grow at break neck speed. Many had discounted Apple’s own capacity for growth and the popularity of its platform with developers. No doubt Android will reach some milestone sometime in the future where downloads are concerned; until that happens however, Android Apps will have to watch as Apple marches on.
